Stopped reading correctly after a couple months
I really wanted to like this external Blu-ray drive, but unfortunately, it's been a huge disappointment. It worked great at first, but after 2 months of use, it started to give me consistent "IPC errors" whenever I try to read blu ray discs. When I first got the drive, it was quick, reliable, and easy to set up. I was able to back up blu rays without any issues. However, after about a month, things started to go wrong. Now, every time I try to rip a blu ray disc, it gets 400 MB in and freezes, then after a while gives me an "IPC error" an. This issue renders the drive almost completely useless. I bought it primarily for backing up, and now it doesn't even read the discs the whole way. I've tried restarting, reconnecting the drive and trying other discs to no avail. I had high hopes for this product, but now I’m just frustrated. It's hard to recommend this drive when it's so unreliable after 2 months of use. It may work for you initially, but if you’re looking for something that will last and consistently perform well, look elsewhere. Very disappointed.

worth the extra money
I bought this and at first I made a mistake; it only plays Blu-rays? I was wrong. It plays DVDs as well. Which is good because the cheap DVD player I bought later crapped out in a week. Turns out I just needed to update my app. This thing plays the discs that crappy player freaked out about.

This will write to a blu-ray disc
This will write to a blu-ray disc. The listing sort of says that on the graphics, but is very cryptic in the text, making this seem like a scam trying to sell you a blu-ray reader that will not write. It does, in fact, write to blu-ray discs. I downloaded a free disc-writing program, plugged this in to my pc, and it wrote a disc with no problem. Strangely, as others have said, it will not read a disc without a powered usb outlet, meaning you need a usb splitter that plugs into the usb port on your computer as well as having its own power supply that plugs into a power outlet. When set up like that this thing works flawlessly, but without the powered usb port, it will not read data from a disc, or even load a dvd.

An excellent peripheral for computers lacking a DVD or Blu-Ray drive
I bought a new laptop last year, and I love how quick it is, but the trend these days with laptop and desktop computers alike is that they no longer come with DVD or Blu-Ray drives. I often use my laptop to watch movies, and it's still useful to me to have the ability to burn data to optical media for long-term storage and to install software with a DVD/Blu-Ray drive. I was just a bit unsure about whether this would work for my specific case since my laptop is set up in dual boot mode (Linux and Windows 11), with Linux as the operating system that I boot into 99% of the time. I'm happy to say that this drive is recognized perfectly without problem in Linux, and I've been watching movies using it without a hitch. The speed of the drive is very good, and it's nice that it supports Blu-Ray for greater capacity disks. I highly recommend this for the many of you out there who would like to use optical media with either your laptop or desktop computer.

Great Drive, but not exactly plug & play...
The Blu Ray Drive Was Just As Described!! It Arrived In PERFECT Condition And It Was Shipped Quickly And Packaged Very Well! However in my experience, it's not just a simple plug and play situation...the drive was recognized with no problem on my older desk top Dell 790, but my VLC player did not play a Blu Ray without some tweaking...I had to watch a YouTube tutorial video, create a folder in my program data files, and add a file to my VLC player for playback!! It all worked fine after that, and it wasn't really that difficult to do (just a little time consuming)...I tried the software they recommended as well, but it didn't work and seemed like you had to purchase additional software? Anyway, My VLC media player is free and works great now after the simple modifications!! Please contact me on Amazon if you need more information or have any questions!! Rick :)

Don't Use a Hub
This external CD/CD ROM/CD RW/CD R player is fine when it works. It is rather picky as to what port you plug into and prefers being plugged directly into a USB port on the computer or laptop. It is not always detected, and you have to unplug/replug it several times (but not all the time). Since many devices only have 2-3 USB ports, I have a USB Hub attached, and the player doesn't always work through the hub. It is time consuming to unplug all the other stuff, like your mouse and printer in order to use directly in the PC/laptop. Its cord is too short to place it anywhere but right next to the computer. I believe its compatibility is universal to all USB ports. But when it works, it is quiet and easy to use.

Region Locked Surprise I Did Not Sign Up For
I was excited to use this little Blu ray drive, plugged it in, everything lit up, seemed ready to go. Then I popped in a region 1 disc and nothing. It spins, makes a few hopeful noises, then just stops like it gave up. The settings showed it was locked to region 2 with only 3 changes left, which already felt sketchy. For a new drive that is not a great sign at all. I tried different discs, cleaned them, restarted my laptop, same story every time. It simply will not read my region 1 movies. That defeats the whole point for me. Now I am stuck feeling annoyed and kinda ripped off. Would not buy again.
