Good Inside by Dr Becky Kennedy

Read my other review. I love this book and have bought several to sgarecwith family and friends parenting young children. Easy to listen to (audio version) or read (hardcopy) and the wisdom shared is so practical AND valuable to both parents/caregivers and the child or children. It's a gift to anyone that takes/makes the time to appreciate it. I wish someone had given me this book ten years ago.

Dr. Becky is nothing short of phenomenal. Whether you're a parent, planning to be one, or simply someone who was raised by another human being, this book has something vital to offer you. This book helped me understand not just children better, but myself—and my own upbringing. It gave me a language for things I’ve felt my whole life but didn’t quite know how to say. It’s like going to therapy, getting a hug, and learning something deeply useful all at once. Read it. Then hand it to someone you love. Then read it again.

This book has changed my life. 3 days into reading it and my relationship with my son took a 180. It’s actually really insane how much this has helped me so quickly. I finally feel excited and confident in my mothering and best of all it has improved my relationship with my son. I love how this book focuses on your relationship with yourself at its core so you can ultimately improve your relationships with your children. It’s also been really comforting to read about the power of repair and all of the easy to understand scenarios and solutions. I love this book so much and love the perspective of looking at children as purely “Good Inside”. A must have for a parent!! I try to read a little bit everyday to help me stay focused and in rhythm with my kids and it is a game changer!!

Life-changing advice.

One of my top 5 favorites. Excellent for child rearing (best I have ever read) as well as for inner healing from past wounds from childhood

Reading this book was so eye opening to me. While I already believe and subscribe to many of the principles discussed in this book, the way everything is connected and explained and based on evidence and psychology really clicked for me.

Profound and insightful

I love some of the advice but a few things were real turn offs. I think it can be difficult to strike the right balance between creating a bonded family and individual members. To that end: no I often won’t join my children in time out. I have to acknowledge my children are human and that means sometimes they have less than the best motives, such that assuming the most generous interpretation of their behavior isn’t going to generate personal responsibility. I love the perspective about lies: it is often what our children wish were true and gives grace when it is would be easier to punish them. We all remember those times as children ourselves. I loved Play No Phone time because I see this in myself. I see how hurtful it is to children to feel less important than what’s happening on the parent’s phone. As with all advice, take what works and modify what doesn’t.
