desertcart.com: X-Men: Soul Killer (Audible Audio Edition): Richard Byers, James Anderson Foster, Marvel: Books Review: Head and Shoulders above other Superhero Books! - First of all, when I saw that it's the X-men meets Count Dracula I laughed and was exremely skeptical about that mix. But let me tell you, the way Dracula is portrayed in this novel is very impressive. He's charming, witty, intimidating, cunning and powerful! His confidence resonates and clashes nicely with the X-men team. But most of all I want to point out, that Byers is a great storyteller. Most superhero books are just action and characters talking to each other, but Byers incorporates more passion into his storytelling. For example, Byers often "freezes time" and describes in great details what the characters are thinking during a battle, and I really appreciate that, it's so much more interesting than just reading about who attacked who, and what happened. This is a great read, if you like action with great description that won't seem rushed, I wouldn't miss it. Review: Four Stars - Not bad copy nice readable.

Wonderful story
When Rogue is kidnapped by Belasco and possessed by his Dark Ones, the X-men must find and rescue her. But the stakes are higher than even the X-men realize. Dracula, the lord of all vampires, has his own reasons for wanting Belasco's plan to fail, and he conscripts the X-men's sister team, Excalibur, to aid in the battle. But does he only wish to help stop Belasco, or is there a more sinister agenda at work? Caught between two of their most powerful foes, the X-men must save Rogue's soul before it's too late. Of all the X-men books that I own (about a dozen or so), this one is probably my favorite. I loved that the X-men and Excalibur were forced to ally themselves with one of their most dangerous enemies -- Dracula -- in order to defeat an even bigger threat -- Belasco, and I loved that their enemies held all of the cards. What really made this story stand out was the personal grudges some of the heroes held against the two main villains (Piotr with Belasco because of Illyana, Kurt with Belasco because he was the demon's servant in another dimension, Amanda with Dracula because the vampire temporarily possessed her and continuously goaded her, Ororo with Dracula because the vampire wanted her as his bride, etc.). The author did an excellent job writing the tense interactions between these characters and showing just how difficult it was for some of them to work along side Dracula and face Belasco. Another wonderful thing about this book was Nightcrawler; not just because he's my favorite character but also because this story takes place when he was at his swashbuckling best. I loved all the sword fighting he got to do and his one-on-one fight with Belasco was fantastic.

X Marks the Spot
It isn't often that Dracula appears in a book and he isn't the main bad guy. That doesn't mean that he still isn't a threat. This is probably the best prose X-Men novel that I've had the pleasure to read. All the characters behave consistently with their comic appearances. Do yourself a favor and give it a shot.
