Pain free at last
I have been having steadily worsening pain in my right hand, which is the hand I use for my computer mouse. I had numbness, tingling, and aching. In the search for relief, I bought an ergonomic keyboard and a Logitech trackball. Logitech M570 Wireless Trackball Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 My hand immediately felt better, but within a week or two it was as bad as ever. I still use the trackball but I took it home for use with my laptop. I set the trackball on the arm of my easy chair and use it instead of the trackpad. I realized part of the problem was a cramped keyboard tray so I replaced that with a 3M Under-Desk Keyboard Drawer, Gel Wrist Rest with Antimicrobial Product Protection (KD45) . At the same time, I began looking for an even more ergonomic mouse. I discovered this "mouse" and the Evoluent vertical mouse. Evoluent VM4 Vertical Mouse Right Handed - The Patented Shape Supports Your Hand Because part of my problem seemed to be not only wrist angle, but also pressure along the length of my index finger I chose the 3M Wireless mouse with some trepidation. My trepidation was related to the reviews that described it as poorly made and that it caused thumb pain.Figuring that I could return it, I ordered the 3M. 3M Wireless Ergonomic Mouse, Small (EM550GPS) I have had it about a week. So far I have found it to be pretty solidly built. It has survived two falls from my keyboard tray. After one fall, the grip felt a little odd and I realized it had slightly sprung open. This was easily remedied by pressing it back together. Although it looks like a joystick, you actually grasp it and move the entire mouse. A toggle switch provides left click and right click. A button on the side of the grip that falls under my finger tips provides scrolling. The scroll is very sensitive and easily stopped by either left clicking with your thumb or clicking the scroll button again. It scrolls up and down and left and right. MY RIGHT HAND IS NOW COMPLETELY PAIN FREE!! That makes this mouse well worth money. As for some of the complaints that others have made, I think they must be talking about older versions or something. I have the following to say: 1. As for the claim that is cheaply built and easily broken, it feels very solid to me and has survived two falls from my keyboard tray onto industrial carpeting with no padding. 2. As for the claim that it has no software for adjustment, it is adjustable for scroll speed, sensitivity, etc. through Windows. 3. As for the claim that the learning curve is too steep, it is true that it will feel very awkward at first. That is absolutely true. It will. So did the Logitech trackball when I first got that. I figure I'll have mastered it in a week or two. Slowing the speed of the mouse and scroll in Windows actually helped. Maybe I can speed it back up after I've mastered it. 4. As for the claim that the mouse speed is too slow or not sensitive enough so you can't get from one part of a page to another without picking up the mouse and moving it around, I found this to be totally not the case. If anything I found the mouse to be too fast and too sensitive at first. This made it hard for me to precisely land on small boxes, "x"s and the like. Going into the Windows 7 mouse settings and slowing it down helped. Of course, I can always speed it back up too. See the above comment about the alleged lack of adjustments. 5. As for the claims of thumb pain, this ergonomic mouse comes in two sizes. I suspect getting the right size is important. My hand was at the upper range of the recommended size for small and at the bottom of large. I chose the small and it is fine. My thumb falls right on the toggle switch without stretching. My thumb feels fine and used to have a lot of thumb pain. I highly recommend this mouse to anyone who is having hand and wrist pain. My hand feels 100% better. UPDATE 12/30/12: I have now had this mouse for more than 8 months. I'm still using it. It has survived more falls from the keyboard to the carpet without breaking. My right hand continues to be free of pain, numbness, and tingling. If you are having problems with your mouse hand related to poor ergonomics, I still highly recommend this mouse.

Best Basic Ergonomic Mouse on the Market - Ever - Not for Gaming
2022 Review: In answer to all the negative reviews on how basic this mouse is, if you're looking for (and reviewing here) a gaming mouse, this is NOT a gaming mouse. This is a mouse for anyone who gets hand, wrist, or forearm pain using a regular or "ergonomic" mouse. It's plug-in ready right out of the box and will be recognized as a normal mouse by your computer. I'm still using this wired mouse for work and buying another one for my personal computer, since I find myself using it more often. As for price, I don't care how much they want for it. For what it does, which is reduce discomfort, I'll pay anything. This purchase is prompted by using a nicely responsive, expensive,, programable, vertical mouse for a day and feeling like I went bowling for the first time in 10 years. Ouch! Haven't been sore like this since I wrote my old review. I highly recommend this mouse if you just need a basic mouse and get sore using one. Save your arm. Buy this mouse. Old Review: I've been using the small wireless 3M mouse for over a year now and I love it. Bought it brand new along with an off-the-desk mousepad that puts it at armrest level. I tried several other expensive mice and keep coming back to this one. I have a small hand and get wrist and forearm pain with a regular right-handed mouse. I had to buy my own mouse for work because my company needs a workers comp claim before they'll buy what you specifically request and I couldn't use the mice they provided without the pain I was experiencing in my right hand. I'm trying to prevent pain and damage so I'm a bit frustrated with my company over this policy. I'm proactive about damage to my body. You only get one and I'd like it to work, pain free, for as long as it can. I did get diagnosed with tendinitis in the right wrist, but that must have been turned down since I haven't heard anything on my last request since 4 months ago. My issue with this mouse is that I snapped the joystick off the base and the glue I applied didn't hold more than a couple months before it let go. So I've been using tape and a really careful grip to keep the joystick in place for about a month. The heat of my hand makes the tape move and let go, so I have to repeatedly re-apply it. Hm, wrist pain with a regular mouse or inconvenience of re-applying tape? I'll take the tape problem, thank you. As long as this mouse continues to work, I'll keep fixing it. It's the only one that I've found is comfortable. In fact, I'm so happy with it that I bought the corded version to take it's place and I'm taking the damaged wireless one home to use with my new laptop. I'm more likely to re-glue it regularly (rather than play with tape just to get things done) if I have it at home where my glue is. A redesign of the housing for this mouse that makes the body seamless where the joystick meets the base would solve this issue. I recommend this mouse.

Cure for tendonitis, other hand issues
This stick mouse takes a little getting use to but it works great to take the stress off your pointer and index finger you usually use to click the mouse. This is the second 3M stick mouse I've owned. First one was wired (wireless was not available at the time). First one lasted approx. 5 years, right click button wore out. Not bad, I used it for work, 40 - 50 hours per week. New stick mouse is wireless, no trouble setting it up, commented automatically, no issues. Works great. The 3M stick mouse takes some getting use to (as I mentioned), you move your arm to move the mouse not your wrist. For highly precise movement, like selecting the edge of something, this can be a bit challenging. If you don't have any hand or wrist issues and you're doing a lot of very fine work with the mouse then this is probably not a good choice. If you have tendonitis in your fingers you use on the mouse (like I had) or arthritis or any other hand or wrist condition and you're doing normal office type of work, the 3M stick mouse is a must have, lifesaver, enabler you can't live without; I hope you find this helpful Best regards,

Forget this wired version, buy the wired model.
I use the wired version, which I highly recommend. It's saved my hand from tendentious. I use this handheld stick mouse with my right hand in combination with the Mac Magic Trackpad with my left. The plan works. I've been able to keep tendentious and carpel tunnel at bay even while I'm at the keyboard most days all day. Now for the bad news on this wireless version. In just three or so weeks it lost its true bluetooth connection. It sputtered and stopped and lagged. Very nerve racking, so I went back to the wired version. So forget the wired version, but DO try out wired 3M mouse.

Put in a little work and this is a great mouse, great value
I've been putting off this review for months because frankly, I'm lazy but there are so many products I buy on here based on helpful reviews I thought I'd give something back. This is a great little mouse that will help you get past your RSI injuries and cramps. Personally, I never got carpel tunnel but my hands (I alternate between right and left) would get very very hot and cramped when using a regular mouse at work. They would get SO hot and cramped up that I'd have to hold ice in my hands towards the end of the work day as well as keep stretching out my hands, wrists and fingers. This mouse is not a heavenly solution because my hands sometimes get warm but I'm no longer suffering. In fact, most days are just fine even when I use the computer at home (different mouse) for hours after work. Here's what work you need to put in: --change the sensitivity or more like clicking speed for your right click on your PC. This is done under devices or control panel. I'm referring to the double click speed you need to open folders and programs--LOWER THIS. Why? See below. --you will need to remap the mouse keys. It is set up to have the right click and left click done by your thumb. This tires out your thumb quickly, a few hours or a few days and you'll know what I mean. To remap, you download a very small, trustworthy program called autohotkeys. This program simply re-assigns the right click button to the biggest button on the mouse, the one meant for scrolling. This eliminates the thumb fatigue completely. Why wasn't the mouse already designed like this? Dont know! Download the program here: [...] Choose "window's installer" In case you are at work and don't want to install this on the crappy work computer, you can run the program off a flash drive. Yes, small and portable. Now, when you first run the program, you'll get a little message saying "Here's a sample script" or something like so. Click ok and select ALL on that page (it will be on Notepad). Select All and paste this on there: MButton::LButton ; Map center-click to left-click LButton::MButton ; Map left-click to center-click Save this and exit notepad! This code tells the program to re-map the keys like I mentioned. The right clicking will be done with your ring and middle finger or both if you'd like. You will scroll with the button designed to right click. Just try it and you'll see what I mean and how it makes this mouse so much better. --Lastly, adjust the cursor speed if you'd like. The mouse responds a little quickly. Now use it and use it. Your hand will get used to it. I actually use it with both hands. I'm good with both hands including sports, it helps a lot. Try it. It beats RSI. NOTE: YOU'LL NEED TO RUN AUTOHOTKEYS every time you use the mouse. If not the buttons act are at default and your thumb will start hurting. Its easy to run the program, just double click the autohotkey icon on your desktop or search for it. You are welcome. I hope this works for you as good as it did for me :] Oh and the mouse feels nice and sturdy, solid build.

3M Wired Ergonomic Optical Mouse is the best on the market for wrist pain!
I've tried every ergonomic mouse that is supposed to help with wrist pain however only the 3M Wired Optical Mouse does exactly as it says it does. It's very comfortable, easy to use, adds no stress to my wrist and is not painful to use. I have severe CMC Arthritis and the trackball mouse I purchased only made things worse. The wireless mouse I purchased in this same design didn't track and skipped all over the monitor so it was very frustrating to use and processes took longer as I couldn't get the pointer where it needed to go. This mouse I absolutely love!!! If I could give it more than 5 stars if I could. Don't waste your time and money on any other one than this one. It's absolutely the best!!!

Can't imagine a better mouse for relieving hand pain
I built a house on my own and used a good 'ole hammer to drive every nail (not recommended). When I got done, I could not feel my fingers, especially at the tips other than occasional stinging and a constant tingling and ache. My job required me to use a mouse all day long and the pain just got worse. Not liking surgery or the fact that the pain often returns after surgery, I got the taller corded version of this mouse. Not long after I trained myself to hold it properly, I have been symptom free for over a decade of continuous use. To show that it was the mouse that eliminated the symptoms, even now, if I have to use someone's traditional mouse, my hand will start to ache in minutes. I can now pound some nails occasionally without a problem. The key to this mouse is that your hand is in a very natural position when using it. People scowl when they look at it until you ask them to stick their hand out in the most comfortable position (kind of like gripping a hammer in front of you). The left and right pick buttons require a small and slight roll of the thumb and the switch is at the first knuckle, not the tip of the thumb. The middle mouse button is on the front side of the stalk and requires a slight squeeze with a couple fingers again at the first knuckle. The buttons are not overly sensitive yet do not require nearly as much pressure and it is not applied at your finger tips. Recently, I bought this small wireless version and am even more pleased. I can't imagine anyone having hands large enough to really fit the taller one.

Only If You Absolutely Need It
In pursuit of the Ultimate Couch Mouse (reclined position, hand on pillow) this mouse is okay. While reclined you put your wrist at an even worse angle with a regular mouse, and after a wrist injury I was looking for something more comfortable. I bought the Penguin mouse, Anker's vertical mouse, and this 3M stick mouse. This 3M is only one that actually puts your hand straight-up. The other's are at an angle. This 3M is the best position. It is very comfortable, and causes no strain. HOWEVER, there is no scroll wheel. There is a button you push that acts like pushing down on a scroll wheel, so you get a circle that moves move the page up or down as you move the mouse up or down, BUT when you use Excel or a website with a list, like who you follow on Twitch, the button only "selects" what you are over, and will NOT let you scroll. It's hard to explain, but essentially the button changes from a scroll to a select if you hover over a list. On Excel (which is a giant list), you can use the tiny right-side scroll built into the program to move, or your keyboards UP and DOWN arrows, but this is unnatural and inconvenient. On Twitch, there is no built in scroll, so you literally CANNOT scroll through your list of followed channels. When you push the button, it opens whomever you had the mouse over in a new tab. It's strange and makes some websites unusable. The penguin mouse was returned because it was no better than the other two. The Anker vertical mouse is used the most because it has a scroll wheel. And this 3M was kept, but is used only when my wrist really needs it (and I'm not watching Twitch). So for lack of a scroll wheel, I'm giving it 3 stars. I'll also note I bought the small size, even though I have large hands, and it seems perfect.
