Collage Techniques: A Guide for Artists and Illustrators

If you're a collage artist, aspire to be one, or collect collage and mixed media art, this book is an important resource. The variety of art in it is dazzling and inspiring. Flipping through the pages, I was amazed by the innovative use of collage elements and refreshing sense of design and balance. Recommended.

This is one of the best art books I have read & studied. It is a concise, well-organized intro to collage art, both historically & technically. Its numerous illustrated artworks are well chosen, timely & of sufficient sizes to be inspiring. Its text fonts are large enough, so the book can be read without a magnifying glass. (Most of my other art books have such small fonts that I have given up attemps to read the articles which are often as rich as the accopanying artworks.) This book deserves to be studied by beginners as well as professional mixed media artisits

The book reads like a textbook. I LOVE to learn, don't get me wrong. But, it wasn't as fun to read as I was hoping. It feels a lot more advanced for a beginner like me. The examples are gorgeous and there's a lot to learn in the book. The author also uses a few samples of his own that come from an obviously highly experienced artist. It's a bit intimidating, but I feel the need to keep reading and learning, as he is a good teacher. I just wish is seemed more 'fun'.

Any collage artist or fan of the collage style will find LOADS to like about this book. The author has chosen a wonderfully wide selection of styles and artists within the collage community to show what can be accomplished with things as simple as found bits of paper and trash that can be picked up almost anywhere for free, as well as a wide variety of other materials, some of which are very unconventional. His writing style is very readable and informative, and I have really enjoyed exploring the different artist's work and getting a glimpse into their creative process. All in all, I would recommend this book to any art student, collage artist, or art fancier, as each should get much more than their money's worth out of it!

Being new to the area of collage, I have been searching out interesting and inpirational books from which to 'get the motor reving' so-to-speak. I've felt like Goldilocks in the Bear's house looking at some of the available materials. "This one is too short, this one is too weird, this one is too singular, this one has no background or wisdom to offer..." But, ah! this one, Collage Techniques, is just right. I found the educational and historical perspectives to be useful and interesting to read, as well as the lessons and explainations. The author uses many good examples that come from a variety of sources, so it is possible to look through and say, "Yes, that's the skill or portrayal that I'm looking for." Collage Techniques doesn't get dry or repetative, nor does it foist a single technique upon the reader. It is an older book, but in-my-opinion, a more comprehensive one than many of the newer collage books. I recommend it very highly.

I am so glad I purchased this book! It’s engaging and just what I was looking for.

This book did not meet my expectations. Sorry to say, it is nothing like BOMMER'S other books which are replete with how-to and examples of his stellar work. This book covers the broader definitions of collage work, working with photographs of people and cutting and pasting magazine cutouts, etc., Much like the graphic design industry before Photoshop came along. it's more of an index featuring page after page of different artists and different applications of collage in a broader spectrum. it's nothing like his other books and so it was promptly returned. if you are looking for a book in general that talks about collage as though you were in a lecture having never heard of collage before this book might be valuable to you. But if you are looking for a book that actually shows the creative process the application of composition and so on this book is not it. I gave it three stars because it is put together well but just not what I was interested in because the title is a little misleading. there's hardly any techniques in it and it is mostly a discussion of different types of collage with very little how to's in it.

Brommer's text is perfect for anyone interested in exploring collage as a fine art. He gives some history, hence context, for the work of collage. There are plenty of different techniques offered for exploration by the reader with lots of detail and materials lists. These are not "specific" projects, but rather show a project using the methods described and leave open-ended your own creation. The art of collage is also placed in current context when contemporary applications are examined in the end of the book. I rate this for anyone interested in collage as an art form. This is not a "craft" book, but rather almost an art course in collage in a book.

É outro livro muito bom; o artista dá excelentes dicas na utilização da técnica de colagem e andei aplicando essas técnicas em alguns trabalhos.

Credo sia uno tra i migliori libri dedicati al collage che abbia letto fino a questo momento. Non solo teoria ma anche indicazioni pratiche ed utili. E’ scritto in Inglese per cui ho dovuto tradurlo. L’unica aspetto che mi sento di evidenziare è che nel testo sono riportate sopratutto opere e demo di Artisti americani. Anche i suggerimenti finali rimandano a fonti americane. Certo, gli americani sono molto bravi nella tecnica artistica del collage, ma hanno un loro particolare stile e, personalmente, avrei ritenuto più equo inserire altre testimonianze di artisti di altri paesi. Comunque, ottimo libro. Consigliato

Eines der besten und profundesten Bücher über Komposition, Farbgestaltung und Bildaufbau, das ich jemals gelesen habe und das durchaus nicht nur für Collagisten! Das Bildmaterial wirkt etwas verstaubt und unspritzig heutzutage, was dem eigentlichen Inhalt des Buches in keinster Weise einen Abbruch tut. Ein eingehendes Studium sowie das youtube-Video des Autors selbst lohnen sich!
