Be prepared it is LOUD! We bought this whistle years ago and it is still going strong. We use it to call our dogs and they can hear it from anywhere on our four acre+ property. The noise it makes is extremely loud but that is what makes it so affective. I have even used it to call in the kids a time or two.

Web reviews about whistles are difficult to do because digital cameras tend to clip loud sounds. After watching quite a few, I decided on the Fox 40 Sharx because of one wilderness guide who tried to test various whistles, grumbled about the lousy audio fidelity of his videos, and said that among all whistles, he keeps returning to the Sharx for everyday carry. So when my blue-and orange model arrived, I went behind our condo unit to test it while my wife remained in the screened porch one floor above me. When I blew the whistle out over the woods behind us, I could definitely hear it through the padded stereo earphones that I wore for protection. And when I went back upstairs, she grimaced slightly and said, "Yep... It's loud!" She wanted LOUD for emergency use and also liked the size and design of the thing. So she's now looking forward to getting her own purple-and-green version! Just be aware that pealess whistles emit a shriek whose loudness depends solely on how much air you blow through them. So in an emergency, blow HAAAAARRRRRD... you can't be timid with pealess whistles. (But don't blow them near someone's ears unless they're trying to do you harm!)
