Well balanced, as it should be
What can I say that people that review books for a living haven't already said? It's a great book. The art is amazing and gets better as the book goes on. The story is strong and well paced. It's just a great book. On par with Gaiman's Stardust, only longer, and doesn't have Charles Vess doing what he does (which isn't a knock, Terry isn't Vess). Buy it. You'll love it. And they make great gifts for young kids that are just getting into reading in their own, also. 👍

Downcast and Delighted?
The story here is hard to witness despite having read the original Bone epic. Some credit is due to Smith and Vess for making the rift that grows between the sisters so vivid and sad. This story did not uplift my spirit like the Bone saga did. In that sense, it is the antithesis of the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings. In Smith's Bone-verse, the longer tale is the one of broad strokes, triumph and happiness. This prequel is dark, exquisitely detailed, and -- ultimately -- perhaps unavoidably -- sad. Sober as the story was, I loved it. Well done.

Great books. This one answered many questions he had ...
My 9 year old loves this series. Written in a comic form, he devoured these books within a few weeks. I kept having to buy the next one and then we donated them to his teacher's library so his friends could read. Bones is a creature who lives with his cousins and goes on adventures with his cousins. He even read them out of sequence then went back and read in order again. Great books. This one answered many questions he had and loved reading it as well.

Highly Recommended to "Bone" Fans
To anyone who has or is reading the "Bone" series- pick this up! I was hesitent to pick up a copy myself- the color illustrations by Charles Vess were strange and foreign to the black and white cartoons of Jeff Smith, but I decided to give it a chance. While it lacks some of the witty humor of the series, this is a action-packed prequel to an already fantastic epic story. Jeff Smith masterfully weaves this installment into the rest of the series. He may not illustrate this part of the story, but his writing is as rich and deep as it's ever been. The reader is given a greater appreciation for the series by jumping back in "Bone" history and following the backstories of Grandma Ben, Lucius Down, the Great Red Dragon, and others. You may even be shocked from what you discover! A definite "must have" for any fan. NOTE: This book is best read after Book Six: Old Man's Cave, which also is the end of Part Two. (Reading "Rose" after Book Seven: Ghost Circles is fine too.) If you read this book before the "Bone" series (even though it is the prequel), many suprises of the series will be ruined.

you feel as though you are a part of the action and have to follow them to the end as they meet more fantastic characters. Every person
Once you start reading about the Bone cousins and their troubles, you feel as though you are a part of the action and have to follow them to the end as they meet more fantastic characters. Every person, animal, and creature adds to the adventure of the Bone cousins as they try to make a new life for themselves and uncover secrets about other characters past which will impact their future. The book act is vibrant with lots of details to the characters (human and other) as well as they scenery around them.
