Rozema's progressive interpretation of Jane Austen's novel finds Fanny Price (O'Connor) as a poor relation who at the age of 12 is "rescued" to begin a life in Mansfield Park, the estate of her aunt's husband. Fanny's beauty and bold intelligence become apparent as she attracts suitors and becomes troubled by the class system and the fact that slavery was the source of much of the family's wealth. Review: Judge it for urself - as a person who likes the novel Mansfield Park, (except that I don't hate Mary Crawford the way that Jane Austen expects me to), I can still be objective and like this movie. yes, it does things differently, but it still sticks to the plot and concept of the book. the main difference is Fanny Price. she is completely different than in the book. what the viewer needs to understand is that the writer/director put Jane Austen in Fanny Price's place... and i'm FINE with that. yes, the writer brought up the idea of slavery in the film, and it was not talked about in the book (tho, it was happening), but i'm fine with the film maker doing that. slavery was happening at the time, the bertrams did own slaves, and we're living in a time where a female writer can talk about these things. back then, such subject matter might have been vexing to the audience. also, by adding it, it gave the characters more depth/things to talk about. it allowed them to go on a journey. the director of this did an AMAZING job at directing everything. it's very well-shot. the actors were awesome. the only shocker was that Fanny Price (Frances O'Connor), and Henry Crawford (Allesandro Nivola, sorry, I butchered his name), had AMAZING chemistry! they were so attractive together, that when I was watching this movie with my ex-boyfriend, he was upset that they didn't get together. I see what he means. some characters looked differently than I thought they would have been, but that's just how things go in film adaptations. yes, this film leaves out things in the book, but out of necessity. a book of this length requires it to be a tv series for it to do all that the book does. yeah, William Price makes no appearance. but I learned to move on. for what it kept in, it did a good job with it. go into this with an open mind. Review: Great movie - Well worth watching.

Mansfield Park is a great movie. This was the first movie I’d ever ...
Mansfield Park is a great movie. This was the first movie I’d ever seen Frances O’Connor in. She knocked her character out of the park in this great story. All of the actors in this movie are outstanding. But what I like best of all is the English countryside. This movie goes well with other movies I love that feature the English countryside, like Miss Potter and Pride and Prejudice (1995). When I’m not watching movies or TV shows, I read everything from nonfiction to westerns. Half of the time I’m reading some of my favorite sci-fi and fantasy authors like Douglas Adams, Isaac Asimov, Paolo Bacigalupi, Ray Bradbury, Orson Scott Card, Arthur C. Clarke, Earnest Cline, Suzanne Collins, Abe Evergreen, Diana Gabaldon, Joe Haldeman, Robert A. Heinlein, Frank Herbert, Hugh Howey, George Martin, Larry Niven, Andre Norton, George Orwell, Patrick Rothfuss, Brandon Sanderson, John Scalzi, John Steakley, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Andy Weir.

Good Light Entertainment
I would recommend this film to those who like historical fiction. It's a good, solid story. You have history, class differences, personal struggles, pride, love, lust, and money. The cast does a fine job. The costuming and settings are delightful. The characters are a bit one dimensional so it doesn't get too heavy. It's good light entertainment.

Lovely, lively, but some changes from Austen's original
I have not read the book of Mansfield Park, but have watched an earlier BBC adaptation before this one. Patricia Rozema's version is visually beautiful and very entertaining, but seems to present Fanny as channeling the Jane Austen of her admirer's imaginations. Fanny seems much like Elizabeth Bennett in this version: self-assured and almost sassy a few times (To Mrs. Norris: "I don't know how long I'm staying here; how long are YOU staying??") in spite of being surrounded by her social 'betters' who often put her down. Being about 4 hours shorter than the BBC miniseries, we get much less of Rushwood and the walks at his estate, and much less of planning the "Lovers' Vows" play at Mansfield Park. Still, a charming production with great musical score and lavish scenery.

A terrific improvisation on a great book
First things first: This is not a straight rendition of Mansfield Park, my favorite of Austen's great novels. Instead,it is a brilliant, creative amalgamation in which the priggish Fanny Price is turned into a lively hybrid - part Fanny Price (the preternaturally astute, but quite dull, judge of character) and part Jane Austen herself, as we know her from her letters. Austen was a sharp tongued genius, who loved only a few people, and thought well of even less - her words, not mine. She was an acute observer of people and had no illusions about human nature. Working on her "two inches of ivory" she created a panorama of personalities and had no compunctions about showing the seamy side of human nature. Patricia Rozema, the writer/director, has produced a wonderful, lively script, and has a superb cast to carry it out. If you want MP straight, this won't be your cup of tea. If you want a wonderful "re-imagining" of what a little Fanny Price mixed with a lot of Jane Austen might have been like, you'll enjoy it - a lot.

loved it
Breathtaking film. Jane Austen herself would have loved it's romantic portrayal of one of her (in my opinion) best works. Aside from her best loved story,"pride and prejudice", "Mansfield Park" certainly carries itself with pride. We can all sort of relate to Fanny Price's character. She was the most human and best understood out of all, and possibly the least appreciated because she's so well reserved and knows herself better than many young people do at that age. It is arguably the most very well portrayed film with such in depth characters, with love triangles , that you can easily see happening in modern times. It shows that if you stay true to yourself, your heart, and your faith, you can avoid going down the wrong course.

Didn't realise this was a Region 1 disc, which won't play on my Universal dvd player! Waste of money!

Me gusta.

Me encantó la película, rescata parte importante de la obra de Jane Austen, obviamente BBC aportó sus toques personales.
