Review: A terrifying, chilling and atmospheric tale about family, tragedy, secrets and wishes - "Be careful what you wish for." Jax, a social worker returns to her beloved grandmother's home after her sister mysteriously drowns in the menacing swimming pool there. Ethel, a newly-wed in 1929 visits a hotel in Vermont. Whilst there, Ethel, who is desperate for a baby discovers a natural spring, rumoured to grant wishes. Both women learn that the water gives, but it also takes... Jennifer McMahon set the scene perfectly for The Drowning Kind with a warning, "For everyone out there who has the good sense to be a little afraid when swimming in deep, dark water. You tell yourself there's nothing down there, but there is. There always is." Well thanks for tapping into one of my biggest fears Jennifer! As a kid, I always hated swimming in pools where I couldn't see the bottom. Then the lake at the summer camp where I worked was so dark, and full of slimy plants which grazed my skin like fingers urghhhh! I was totally gripped reading this, and filled with tension, but had to pause reading at night because my little racing heart couldn't take the fear, the eeriness, and the foreboding feeling which grew and grew! I couldn't stop thinking about that dark, icy water! I am a giant wimp though, so most of you will probably find this scary and creepy, but not overly terrifying like I did!😂 Full of jealousy, guilt and mental health issues, The Drowning Kind had a few twists which got me! The captivating writing gave me chills, and as we followed two different timelines, I was fascinated with both stories, particularly Ethel's. The characters were well written, with flaws, and often made unwise choices lets just say! I did find myself shouting at the book a few times, mostly along the line of nooooo stay away from that pool! Once I had finished reading, I was surprised to find tears on my face. The ending in this just got me! Despite the tears, I did find that it was a satisfying ending, I wouldn't have wanted it to end in any other way. I am definitely going to read more of this author's work, and absolutely recommend this one if you are looking for a creepy read. What I do know, is that I'm not going swimming for a while... Review: Spookily Good Read! - No idea why I put off reading this for SO long as it was SO good! The Spring gives & the Spring takes away…. How to describe this twisty tale… supernatural? Mystery? Thriller? Fantasy??? I have no idea! This book is such a jump from my usual preferred genres of historical fiction and this made me reluctant to read it. Fear of the unknown but, once I’d started it, I realised that this entire book was about the “fear of the unknown”! It’s a slow-burn but well worth a read.
