Review: I used to be a fan of Hornby, because his characters always seemed real and believable. Unfortunately lately it seems that he writes hoping to sell the rights easily for some silly American romcom. The topic of this book could be so interesting: the relationship of a white woman in her 40s having and a black man in his early 20s, but I simply didn't buy it. I don't understand why it started at all. The characters are so poorly developed that I couldn't get their motivations and, why they are together, we cannot get to know them deeper and what's going on with them. Besides all the other characters are just a pile of cliches or were just placed there to add some paragraphs to the book, they had no importance at all, like that Michael person that simply disappears or her sons that could be perfectly replaced by dogs as didn't add anything to the plot and their mother doesn't seem to care about them or about anything at all actually. And nothing really happens. We read a lot of descriptions of what meat she's buying, what is served for dinner or tea, but nothing adds to the plot. Even when people start talking about them being together or when she realizes that her sons know about them, nothing! No tension, no funny thing, no plot twist, no development, simply nothing. Hornby witty writing has been replaced here for some f* words probably trying to reach an audience that think that this is bold writing.

Der Roman behandelt u.a.
