Hasegawa 1:72 Scale AV-8B Harrier 11 Model Kit

Compared to the older 1/72 Hasegawa AV-8A kit, this one is a major improvement. The parts fit well, with engraved panel lines and much better detail. The upper air intake doors are open while the lower ones are clearly visible with a little highlighting. The landing gear and outriggers fit more securely than with the A version, and the engine nozzles are much better than those on the A kit as well. There are decals for two different USMC squadrons, and there are multiple underwing stores options available with the separate Aircraft Weapons sets. After viewing the stores chart provided in the instructions, I chose a precision strike load of GBU-12's, Maverick ASM's and Sidewinders. There are a couple of issues. The decals for the VMA-223 version are barely visible against the shades of grey used on the sides and underside, and the MARINES decals intended for the base of the tail are a little too big to fit in the space they're supposed to be. I had trouble placing the decals and keeping them in place, making it necessary for me to hand paint the tail code letters. There was also a minor problem with the ejection seat sitting too high to allow secure placement of the canopy in the closed position. But overall, this is a good kit and a good value.
