I bought this for my grandson's 2nd birthday. He's big for his age, 2 1/2 now and 3ft tall, still plays w/it. My grand daughter is 5 and she loves it too! 2-5 is a good age range, may even be ok for some 6 yr old's

Q: What is the difference between this one and the anniversary edition?

The price is higher and the car is red on the anniversary edition. Other than that it's the same.

Q: The wheels in front are very stiff and our little guy doesn’t make it over the hump. Do they loosen up over time? Or is this car defective?

It's likely defective. Ours was the same for the front and back wheels. We got a full refund through Amazon and had to purchase new wheels, axle, etc from the Step2 website. But the new wheels from Step2 came with no instructions on how to assemble. We figured it out and now the car works.
