Ultimate Bugopedia: The Most Complete Bug Reference Ever (NGK Ultimate Pedias) Review: Awesome 👌🏼 - Perfect gift for my bug-obsessed 7-year old. He's able to read everything by himself and loves the big, detailed pictures and variety of interesting bugs. It's been a lifesaver at restaurants and during car rides in and has helped cut down a bit on screen time. Very educational and fun book! Review: Perfect for bug enthusiasts - We have a 7yo friend who loves bugs and everything bugs. We got it as a gift to her and she lovvved it. I wasn’t sure if the bug will be too advanced for her. But she was so happy looking at the pics and reading the parts that she could understand. This is as the gift she chose to carry with her on car drives after and that made me the happiest aunt :) Older kids and even adults will enjoy the book too. It has a lot of info and really cool pics.

It is scalable for children four and up.
I expect my granddaughter and I to get years of entertainment while enjoying ourselves at the same time. This year I am helping her learn to classify bugs into their different groups. Beatles, ant, etc. plus as it’s swarming time how to differentiate between ants and termites. As she gets older she will learn more about scientific classification of bugs and yes arachnids are bugs just not insects. We will learn about the heroes and villains at play in this fascinating area. We look forward to wearing this book out over years of play, learning, and research. Her father was the same way with books when he was growing up. Thank you for such a wonderful gift for her. Michael, Sr.

My insect lover doesn’t want to put it down
I got this for my 4 year old son for Christmas. He loves it and has had me read it to him at bedtime for about a month straight. We’ll read about 4-5 bugs each night. The writing is advanced for his age so I’ll just use easier words and skim over some things here or there to make it more age appropriate. He’s very interested in the photos. He just wants to keep reading more and more. I love that this is a book he can grow with for years. I even enjoy reading it to him because I’ve learned some interesting things I didn’t know and I like looking at the photos too. I’d highly recommend it if you have a little insect lover like me!!

Students Love It!
I'm a science teacher, so I try to keep a good amount of nonfiction books in my room. The kids love this one and the reptile version. The images are bold, and the info is pretty solid. Kids actually enjoy sharing what they read too. These books hold up well too, so I don't have to worry quite as much about the students who can be a bit more on the rough side.

Arrived warped and musty smelling
Great book my little guy loved it and all the information it holds on his bug catching adventures. But it did arrive smelling musty and slightly warped, even though the box was bone dry and I got it off the porch the second it arrived on a dry day. That's why I gave it only four stars.

Engaging!
My bright, inquisitive 5-yr old grandson is loving this book! It will be useful to him for quite a few years as his reading abilities grow. He's crazy over bugs (among other subjects) and loves the clear photos and curious about the infographics. I think he will get several years' use out of this book before outgrowing it. He has already requested a book just like this 'on fish'. Hmm...hopefully the Ocean book will suffice but I think being a budding fisherman he is also looking for information on lake and brook fish. So glad we took a chance on this book and we'll probably order more in this series. Packaged well (talk about overkill...the box was huge!) and the pages are thick and good quality glossy paper stock.

From the Praying Mantis looming out of the frontispiece, National Geographic Kids uses visuals (over 400 mostly excellent colour photos, maps and graphs across 265 pages) to draw in the young insectophile-to-be. A short introductory section presents the basics of ‘bugs’, each topic spread across just two facing pages, with multiple photos and graphics limiting text to at most three or four short paragraphs. We learn where insects fit within the biodiversity and evolutionary history of the planet, basic life cycles, key adaptations and behaviours, habitats and functions within ecosystems, migratory patterns, their importance and roles relative to people and threats to insect extinction. This firm base allows 80% of the book to focus on the major insect orders and species within them, and the key elements that make those species or orders unique or particularly interesting. The 80 or so insects chosen range from the common or iconic to the unique and truly bizarre. Who wouldn’t want to learn about blood-sucking moths, beetle larvae heavy as a cell phone, or ants that use their larvae as a glue stick? Each order/family/species gets a basic two-page spread. Identification is done more or less by eye, using the basic features of each order or, in some cases, family. Specific identification requires additional resources, some of which are provided. Scientific terms are used, explained and backed up by a good glossary. This is an excellent basic resource for students in Grades 5-8, and should sit on outdoor centre shelves as well.

Great quality book, with many good descriptions of the content. Durable enough to withstand the dropping from a toddler, light enough for a toddler to carry.
