These are my third pair of Bostons. Loved the other two pairs and chose these because I'd fallen in love with the colour after seeing them in a shop in Berlin (didn't have my size.) Thought the fact they had a 'soft footbed' rather than the normal footbed I'm used to wouldn't make much difference, but I was wrong. The previous shoes felt great straight off the bat and have only become more comfortable as I've worn them in. I've had this pair two days now and the softness of the liner feels squelchy and sweaty and like you have to expend more energy compensating for the 'give' in the shoe compared to the regular footbeds. Having now researched other people's experiences with the soft footbed I gather they eventually flatten down and feel better, but having worn these most of today now, I couldn't wait to slip into an older pair of regular footbeds this evening. The relief was palpable. I really wish Birkenstock made their regular footbed in this very dark brown/black colour with the copper buckle cause they look great, but disappointed in the soft footbed. Still probably more comfortable than other shoes, but not for me.
