Melanie Martinez wants to tell you a story. It's fictional, but it's also about her, in a way that's somewhat exaggerated and darker than reality. The tale traces through Melanie's debut album Cry Baby, a collection of pop songs that draw inspiration from singer-songwriter folk and hip-hop and follow a character who learns to be more comfortable with who she is. The journey of the character, who Melanie dubbed Cry Baby, mirrors the musician's own. The Cry Baby album is a softpack with a full-color 32-page storybook written by Melanie Martinez and illustrated by Chloe Tersigni. Review: Stellar Debut Album - I always heard people say good things about this album. But I never truly knew how good it was until I listened to the album myself. This whole album is a concept album surrounding a character called crybaby. This album tells a story of how crybaby changes. Each song tells such an interesting story... 1. Crybaby - This Is a cool start for the album. It is such a catchy song, and introduces the crybaby character. 2. Dollhouse - This song is pretty dark. I love it though, she is basically saying that her family is not as picture perfect as it seems, and that they put on an act, but behind the scenes there is a lot more problems with the family than people may think. 3. Sippy Cup - I love the beat and the lyrics on this track, definitely a favorite track for me. 4. Carousel - Great beat on this track. She says this love she has with this guy is going round and round like a carousel. Where she (metaphorically) is stuck on this carousel. Another favorite! 5. Alphabet Boy - This Song is pretty good as well, but does fall a tad bit short compared to the other tracks. 6. Soap - The lyrics on this track is good. I loved the bubbly beat drop at first, but when I play it too much the beat drop gets old quickly. 7. Training Wheels - She is wanting to take the next step in this relationship and wants to take the training wheels off the relationship. Cool song, but not completely in love with it. 8. Pity Party - I like the verses, and it seems as if no one showed up to crybabies B-Day. It is a strong song, defenitley single material. 9. Tag you're it - creepy song, not sure how I feel about it. I'll leave it at that. 10. Milk & Cookies - Very haunting bedtime story track almost. Defenitley a stand out track. 11. Pacify Her - Great track. This track starts crybaby as the antagonist. Showing that her rebel/crazy side is coming out. 12. Mrs. Potato Head - Melanie was so smart on the writing on this track. If she did have writing credits on this track. This is another favorite for me. She talks about plastic surgery. 13. Mad Hatter - crybaby embracing the crazy. And such a banging beat. 14. Play Date - pretty catchy deluxe track, surprised it was not included on the standard edition. 15. Teddy Bear - Such a great beat, but overall it is a good track but not a standout on the deluxe. 16. Cake - Favorite deluxe track. She uses cake as a metaphor for describing herself. She says you can not just take the frosting and use me for sex. You got to take the whole cake. It is great. Melanie made an amazing debut album. I can honestly say she is already one of my favorite artists after one album. I guarantee I will be buying future releases from her. Review: One of her better ones - Great album. One of her better ones.

Amazing debut album and Interesting concept
I am in absolute awe of this album and all the work put into it. From the production to the artwork in the booklet, Melanie Martinez expertly captures the life and times of her character/alter ego, Crybaby. Melanie has often stated she wanted the album to express dark, adult themes within the context of children's lullabies. You can hear how well she's crafted the feel of this in the tracks "Tag You're It" & "Milk and Cookies." Using a great Leslie Gore sample in "Pity Party," she creates an atmosphere that one can dive into. I first came across Melanie with the release of American Horror Story: Freakshow's premiere trailer -- the track "Carousel". Since then, I purchased her Dollhouse EP (title track of the EP is also featured on the full-length) and fell in love. I feel that she has a wonderful and unique sound and she was able to translate that perfectly for her album. I am desperately waiting to see how she will connect this concept to her live shows, which I will be attending in March! Other than the music, the insert of the CD recounts the story of Crybaby and features amazing art that's perfectly cute yet morbid. I could honestly go on and on about this album all day. So instead of just reading my review, buy it and check it out for yourself! Best songs: "Soap" / "Crybaby" / "Sippy Cup" / "Training Wheels" / "Pity Party"

I love this album
I love this album! I've been listening for free thru my Amazon Prime account and love it so much I just ordered the CD. If I had a turntable, I'd also order the LP just so I can own a bigger version of the artwork that Melanie speaks about that's included. Because I love the music, I can't wait to see the artwork that she commissioned for the album because I assume it will be on the same level of her music. Besides the great music, her lyrics speak to me because she writes about topics that many of us experience and think no one else has the same troubles as us. For example, "Dollhouse" perfectly describes a household that has troubles inside but the family puts on a fake face and act for the world outside. Anyhow, I'm excited for the CD to arrive so I can listen in the car. Yes, her music contains explicit lyrics but I believe there's also a "G" rated version.
