Not a fan.
I am a little disappointed with this book. It did not meet my expectations at all, and I felt like Alpha-rat - Chase - got off way too easy. I realize that he has amnesia, and that with his memory of the past gone, he's a changed person, but I could not sympathize with him the way others did, and definitely would not as fast as everyone did. Perhaps I'm not the intended audience for this book, but I felt the writing was very simplistic, the notion of bullying was brushed over and not taken as seriously as I hoped it would be. We have two horrible bullies, and a third bully who was the worst of them all but had lost his memory. When I say bully, I don't mean picking on someone or calling them names or shoving them around. No, this was more serious. This was getting people hurt, getting them almost killed, kind of bullying. Yet, it's always covered up by the school, by the parents, by the administrators at school - only because Chase is a star football player. He comes back from his accident and is Mr. Nice Guy and within moments everyone is ready to give him a chance and actually "like" him and forgive him for his past behavior. The ending, with the courtroom scene, and everyone standing by him was super cliché and unrealistic, in my opinion. I'm not condemning him. I'm sure he DID change. But I would've liked to see more of a character development, a deeper sense of emotion and justice playing out. This was easy. Way too easy. Sorry. Not a fan.
