Family-friendly Deliverance, Streep and Bacon at their best
Remember Deliverance, the Heart of Darkness-style river-rafting tale with Burt Reynolds? This is like that, except minus the gross stuff, and with much better acting. Sorry Burt, but you never were on the same level as Meryl Streep or Kevin Bacon. Both are fantastic in River Wild, helped out by David Strathairn (whatever happened to him?) and John C. Reilly. This family adventure drama will have you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. When an unhappy Yuppie couple and their son go whitewater rafting, they drift into way more trouble than a few roiling rapids by reluctantly joining forces with some fellow rafters who give off a bad vibe right from the start. Filmed in Montana and Oregon, the film is spectacular to look at. The script is well-done and the suspenseful pace is relentless. Streep shines and brings to her character the kind of depth and complexity that you expect from one of the greatest actresses of all time. Bacon shows he can definitely do creepy and sinister, no problem. Well worth the rental fee on Prime. I'd even watch it again.

One of the best suspense films of the 90’s
Kevin Bacon is diabolical in the antagonist role. Meryl Streep is a smart, powerful protagonist hellbent on saving her family. Special shout out to John C. Riley, before his comedy hayday. As much a man v. man as it is a man v. nature story, combined with beautiful scenery and exciting white water rapids, The River Wild is a zero cgi adventure that will have you rooting and cheering in the end. Original score by Jerry Goldsmith and one of Chris Hanson’s best films. You will love this movie, and it’s one of those pg-13 movies with no nudity/sex, little gore/blood, minimal cursing, and a satisfying conclusion, that its safe to show to mature preteens and teens.

One Of The Best Thrillers Of the 90's
One of my top 10 of my personal top 250, I have watched this film about 20 times since 1995. What I enjoy most is how the film showshow children worship what is "cool", as Joseph Mazzello's "Roarke" demonstrates early on in his adoration of Kevin Bacon's character, and at the same time finds his father (David Strathairn) disappointing, since he is a workaholic and often fails to follow through on eventsin his kids lives. But as a result of the rafting trip, he learns that sometimes the less exciting one is really the one who ultimately loveshim and risks his own life to save his family, when the chips are down. One reviewer on IMDB liked the film until Mazzello, at the endof the film says to the ranger when asked about what his father did says resolutely' "He saved our lives!". Said reviewer thought this wasstupid in relation to the events of the film. In my view, this was the most emotional moment of the film, showing the important lesson helearned about life from this experience. He went from shaming his father to respect, love, and understanding. Great literature as well asgreat films show little cues early that may seem irrelevant, only to be explained or revisited late in the story to be extremely revealing. Some reviewers look for flaws, which like most films, this may well have. But as an entertainment with tension and emotional power, this movie is totally satisfying.

Kevin Bacon is unhinged
The river wild follows Meryl Strep as a former white water rafting guide navigating both the river and a rocky marriage on a 4 day trip for their sons birthday. Befrending another group of rafters who lose their guide things quickly turn sour and the family trip turns into a fight for survival.Meryl Strep's character is so raw it feels like your right there in the boat and Kevin Bacon is so menacing there is no telling what will happen next. This movie will have you on the edge of your seat the whole time
