Midway - DVD, BLURAY, Digital

I wanted this to be a good movie, but it was great! The bluray disc I received produced a terrific picture and awesome Atmos sound. The one review I read pitched it as okay with too much cgi. Well, that reviewer didn't know his history. A WWII movie can never provide a cover to cover story of the great war and not even a part of that war. What Midway does is to tell a number of little stories and it does that very well against a backdrop of the attack on Pearl Harbor, action at Midway, all the while setting the stage for prelude to war, the strategic decisions, and how the Navy strikes back at Coral Sea and Midway. The casting is great, the story is very good, and the action, despite loads of cgi, is very acceptably good at showing how the war was fought and battles were won and lost, keeping to the confines of a short time period. Midway is great at depicting courage, dedication, patriotism, conflicts, and relationships. And Midway keeps it all balanced and interesting while avoiding excesses. I have to say it avoids needless blood letting and violence. But it does depict a large scale air, sea, and land war in great detail. Certainly, in a good action movie there are some points of accuracy sacrificed for keeping the story moving or dramatic. Keeping this spoiler free, I can say that the story was so good I forgave every shortcoming. I felt that Midway avoided overdoing the expected while surprising me with new and imaginative story angles. I was not there nor can I speak for any Navy or veterans, but this was a great show. We didn't have the best weapons, bit we had some great fighters who came together to carry the day. Expecting this might come off as a remake, I submit that the direction and editing made for a fresh approach that reeled me in. In just the first 15 minutes I knew it was a winner. Really, I give 4-1/2 out of five stars. The package came on time and was well wrapped. Excellent image and audio quality. High quality Dolby Atmos surround sound. The production quality is quite high. Cast and crew put their backs into this. You will easily imagine what it might have been like. I am not a good reviewer, but I like great movies. This one came with an okay review and it turned quickly into a winner!

Great world war II movie. I was very impressed with the planes and the action.

It covers a fair amount of history but does not drag on. If you or interested in history, you will like it.

Great movie, action packed story line

Came fast and in good condition

There are countless sites where movies are rated, but it all comes down to a personal opinion, everyone’s taste is different. I’ve never been influenced about what movie I choose to watch by reading a review, whether it is by someone who gets paid for writing it or some other person I don’t know. Ratings are done after the fact .. . saying they should have shot it a different way or they should have chosen a different actor doesn’t change the finished product and never will. What should be reviewed here is the physical product that was purchased … is it as advertised, is the pressing free from defects, is the sound track recorded properly and possibly is a better (in this case UHD 4k) version better than a standard BluRay or even a standard DVD version. My belief is that recording old classic B&W movies in 4k is a waste, it can’t improve how it was shot or the analog soundtrack and it actually detracts from the way the creators of that movie intended it to look and sound. More recent, yes even twenty year old movies can be worth the extra effort to record it to UHD media if the customer has the proper playback and viewing equipment. THIS MOVIE I bought this because this movie has been regarding as being one that is truly worth getting in UHD, and besides that it’s a movie I wanted to watch. The presentation is great, the pressing is excellent, the soundtrack (through my surround sound system) is breathtaking and the cost is reasonable, not much more than renting it and watching a compressed streaming version. YES OR NO For a truly enjoyable movie watching experience I not only liked the movie but the disc pressing is as good as it gets.

It was a good film especially with the Dolby ATMOS soundtrack, that brought it alive.
