This goes on every ride!
I use this on my road bicycle every time I go out. I love that I can select which items I want on my main screen and which arrangement best suits my needs. I like time, temperature, speed, %grade, & trip distance traveled. Your smart phone enables safety features to notify your emergency contacts. There is also an alarm to alert you to someone tampering with your bike. The signals for drink reminders and for approaching traffic (if you have the optional radar component) are easily heard, and displays are easily read. I fell once, and the attachments were very secure. What I wish I could do is add 'undocumented' miles (at first, I'd forget to turn on the Garmin). I love being able to see the degree of rise in hills and also to know the temperature. I don't use any extra monitors, so cannot comment on their effectiveness. Mapping features have been little used by me. I know the maps are accurate, but have never ridden in an area where I needed them. This piece of equipment is TMI for some, but I really appreciate having the info, and there are a number of features I have not yet used. I highly recommend this Garmin!

Great improvement over the Edge 800
I replaced my ailing Edge 800 with an Edge 830. I’m pleased that the 830’s display is far more readable on my morning rides when the sun is low in the sky—a welcome improvement. Bootup, GPS acquisition time and battery life are improved, too. The internal maps are amazing. I’m surprised to see the detail of our local riding paths (not streets). One gripe: The main display shows distance, large and very readable, but speed is displayed in a much smaller font. With old eyes and vibration, it can be hard to read. There’s plenty of room on the display to make fonts larger. Why not? Operation is semi-intuitive but you can get lost among all the menus and widgets. The printed manual is no help as none of this is covered. Go on-line for complete descriptions. To find features that are buried deep in menus, search the internet… “Edge 830 [your desired feature].” The Garmin Connect phone app has lots of fancy features to encourage your riding activity such as earning “badges” for your progress. Here again, it’s easy to get lost among all the features and menus. The app connects via Bluetooth to the 830 during and after a ride. If you’re a gadget geek, you’ll love it. If not, you might consider a more basic model. For a very complete review and description of features, search the web for “dcrainmaker Edge 830.” This impartial review compares the 830 with other models and has many screen photos.

Road biking, everything you need Garmin support, second to none
I did alot of research before deciding on this unit. It has way more features then I’ll ever use but that means it has everything I need. It is a bit of a struggle to setup. For some reason the Bluetooth pairing initially kept failing. A simple reboot of both phone and garmin fixed the issue. The touchscreen works fine but is a bit slow to respond to touch. Not terrible though. Battery life seems good enough but I imagine about 8 hours of use is the most you’ll get out of a new unit. I’d recommendation charge after every 5 hour ride or so. I only road bike these days. I use Strava routes, the map features, and a HRM. for my display I have mph, distance, time riding, HR, and 5 mile laps. Uploading courses/routes from garmin connect and/Strava is easy. The map feature has worked flawlessly for me and let me know if upcoming turns with plenty of advanced notice. It even warns of upcoming sharp curves. The notification alerts is a bonus. Seeing texts come in and knowing weather or not I need to pull over to respond is a nice feature. The emergency feature is nice as well. I accidentally sent an emergency response while trying to turn the unit off and my family responded immediately. Oops. Unfortunately, after my third ride with this unit, I dropped it and the upper left corner of the screen cracked. While I had no issues with the unit and it’s functions, I was concerned about water seeping into the unit and destroying it. I emailed garmin support to let them know I would be willing to pay to have the screen replaced. They responded very quickly and said they would cover the unit under warranty. Wow!! That my friends is how you do it. Can’t say enough about garmin support. Top notch. Had a replacement unit in my hands within 10 days. They have my business

Generally a nicely done package, love the integration with the phone app and cloud storage via Garmin Connect. It's been really great for keeping track of my rides and where I have to focus to improve my fitness level. I also love the integration with Strava and Trailforks, pretty much seamless and it was invaluable when I went on a road trip to an unfamiliar area - finding the trails and trailheads was much easier. I went with the 830 over the 530 as some review sites suggested that the touch screen was a big improvement over the button-only operation of the 530. So far, works well, even when I'm wearing mountain bike gloves. I have a pair of gloves with rubberized fingertips for better grip on the brake levers, those don't work as well with the touch screen, so I have to use a thumb or baby finger. My biggest complaint is that the menu system could be set up to be more intuitive. Sometimes I find myself going through the menus over and over just to find a specific setting or stat, eventually finding it in an oddball place in the menu tree. Using the Connect app avoids this most of the time, but still would be nice to have this done better.
