The Smashing Pumpkins - Pisces Iscariot[Remastered] [2 LP] - desertcart.com Music Review: Despite some glaring audio flaws, this is a must have for Smashing Pumpkins fans. - When this disc was released, fans of the band quickly noted some major flaws with the album and its bonus disc. The song "Plume" on the main album had been replaced with a different take of the song, various songs on the bonus discs have digital "glitches," and many of the tracks on the bonus disc suffer from massive brick walling. That being said, this is still a treat. With the exception of the wrong take of "Pulme," the remastered album sounds great, and is a nice sonic upgrade of a classic B-sides collection that stands up with the bands main albums. The music here shows everything the band is capable of from gently strummed acoustic ballads ("Soothe" and the band's famous cover of "Landslide"), psychedelic rock ("Starla" and Spaced") and gentle lullaby-like sing-alongs ("Blue," "La Dolly Vita," and "Whir") Of course, the band famous distorted guitars and generation-X rock anthems are here as well. "Frail & Bedazzled" and "Plume" in particular display the bands distinct duel guitar sound, while "Hello Kitty Kat" and "Pissant" stand as some of the most ferocious songs ever recorded by the band. The bonus disc, on the other hand, remains a bit paltry. Besides the previously mentioned problems with loudness, some of the songs are double dipped ("Why Am I So Tired" and the live performance of "Slunk" can be found on Earphoria) and many of the songs (particularly the Pre-Gish stuff) has been widely circulated for years. Considering that this particular reissue seems more aimed for the hardcore fan, it seems like some more unreleased stuff could have been unearthed. There are some cool moments, in particular the stretch of "Crawl," "Cinder Open," and "Blissed" show the band at its most vulnerable and spacey. What very much makes up for the errors of the bonus disc is the extra material that comes with it. First off is a 1988 performance of the band from a Chicago cable station. Once you get past the initial shock/humor factor of seeing the band so young (Billy has hair! James looks like he's 12! D'arcy is wearing ridiculous clothes! Jimmy has a mullet!) this show makes clear just how tight the band was early on, even if the songs are not perfect. Still, one cannot deny the songwriting prowess of bandleader/songwriter/guitarist Billy Corgan when the set opens with a song that sounds like a Cure b-side and ends with a songs that's riff sounds like it could be Iron Maiden, and still works together. Also present on the DVD are some clips of the band playing various songs from 1989 to 1994. Also worth mentioning is the exact replica of the band's original demo cassette. Yes ladies and gentlemen, it actually comes with a cassette including the original cover art and track listing. While many may have problems finding a cassette player, it certainly still is a nice way to own a small piece of Pumpkins history. So despite the amateur errors made on the album and the disappointing with some of the choices made on the bonus disc, the DVD and cassette are certainly worth the price of admission. Review: Perhaps the Best of the Pumpkins - I'm a big fan of the Pumpkins and if you like the band this is a MUST-have album. You won't find any of these b-sides and rarities elsewhere on other releases and probably won't recognize any of them unless you purchased certain singles over the years. I love their remake of Stevie Nicks' "Landslide," which might be my favorite song on the release. Whir is another fantastic, underrated release, as are Frail & Bedazzled, Obscured and La Dolly Vita. Great tunes that easily could have made the cut on other releases. If I were to give this album a name, I'd call it "Siamese Dream, Vol. II." This is the Pumpkins at their height and at their finest.

Essential Pumpkins - poor vinyl product! Steer clear!
I've been a huge fan of this since it came out. The songs are all oddities and B sides but it really holds together better than you'd expect for such an album. This issue is nicely done with this card stock outer jacket and plastic lined inner sleeves. My review is more of the vinyl. This album has been unavailable for quite a while so I ordered a copy from a reseller. Upon listening I found that there are a lot of pops and farty sounds. I thought it was my speaker failing but then I got two different albums in the next day and they sound perfect. Also, there are visible defects, although I can't say that they make any noise. Anyhow, I worked with the reseller to return it as a bad product with manufacturing defect. Fast forward a week, the album became available on Amazon so I ordered a copy. When it got here I threw it on the table and had the same farty sounds and even worse looking defects. Another dud. I would advise steering clear of this. The product is simply inferior. I own all the SP vinyl reissues up through Adore, and a few newer ones too. All of them are completely flawless. This one turned out bad for some reason. Quite unfortunate.

Amazing Compilation, Sub-par pressing.
I abolutely love SP and Pisces Iscariot is in my top 3 albums. Only complaint i have with my copy is side A has a weird stretching defect where it distorts the music. Side B sounds amazing though. Side A was badly pressed but the rest sounds amazing!

I listened to the whole thing, sounds clear
I find that the album was reviewed by others to be errored, but I had no errors when I first played this album. I can't tell the difference between vinyl and CD. But some people can. I find that switching sides and between records is different thank skipping to the song track on a CD. I always worry about scratching the record, and you can go to any song on a CD... Not really a problem, but sometimes your favorite song is in the middle.

Almost perfect remaster
Corgan's remastering of his back catalog has been perfect thus far, except for one song - Plume. Both the B-side version on the Siamese Dream remaster and the A-side version here are different from the original in noticeable ways, this version moreso than the Siamese one for some reason. Different lyrics at times, different (almost re-recorded?) guitar parts, etc. Beyond that, it's all been the way remasters should be done. And the B-sides on Pisces, appropriately (since Pisces was a bunch of B-sides), are a great set. Jackie Blue, There It Goes, My Dahlia are all highlights that could've been on proper albums. I'm still waiting for more of the real old stuff (more Reel Time Sessions and 1988-era stuff in particular), but I can't complain about anything so far. Except Plume - I'm still wondering about that one.

These days a lot of the new pressed vinyl record have a substantial surface noise. This record is dead silent. There's hardly any surface noise. The SQ is also great. One of the best buys in a long time.
