A big fan of Stewart. Great writer that is easily read and puts you right there beside him on his adventures.

I have always been a reader of travel literature. Rory Stewart’s “The Places in Between” is a modern classic of the genre. It thoroughly deserves to be widely read. The essence of Stewart’s book is a journey he took entirely on foot from Herat to Kabul shortly after the fall of the Taliban. Arguably, this was a foolhardy mission and it certainly had its moments. Nonetheless, Stewart’s book is a wonderful and enchanting description of chance encounters, breathtaking scenery and some scary mishaps. Stewart takes the journey with the companionship of a large locally acquired dog. Although this may seem normal in a western country, dogs are considered dirty in Afghanistan and it definitely raised some issues for him along the way. The dog, however, proves to be a good foil and companion for Stewart. Finally, if there is one conclusion to be drawn from the book, it’s that the politics of Afghanistan are intractable. The nation is riven by religious, racial and linguistic barriers. There seems to be no chance that these will be resolved in the medium term. This is a shame. The nation is unfortunately blighted as a consequence.

Rory gives an in depth understanding of rural Afghanistan, involvement in years of tribal war ,the harsh environment, destruction of homes, western ideals and the Muslim faith.

Si dice che sara' il prossimo prime minister, Rory Stewart, scozzese a lungo al servizio del foreing office in Indonesia e nel Montenegro, ha iniziato nel 2001 un viaggio in solitaria a piedi di circa 10000 km dalla Turchia all'India, ma arrivato al confine tra Iran ed Afghanistan le autorita' iraniane, sospettandolo, forse giustamente, di compiti di intelligence, gli hanno ritirato il visto d'ingresso, costringendolo ad una lunga diversione attraverso Bangladesh Nepal fino ad arrivare in India. Deciso a completare il percorso si e' fatto portare ad Herat e nel gennaio del 2002 ha percorso a piedi il cammino seguito dal gran moghul Babour nel 1500 fino a Kabul per raggiungere l'India e fondarvi la sua dinastia. Circa 600 km sotto la neve tra passi di montagna di quasi 4000 metri con un pesante fardello, accompagnato tra mille rischiose avventure da rare e svogliate, non sempre, guide, dormendo in capanne di fango addossato ad una parete o in fredde moschee, tormentato dalla diarrea, zuppo dalla testa ai piedi con neve alta fino al petto e scarso cibo. Herat, Chacharan Bamiyan, quella dei giganteschi Buddha distrutti a cannonate dai taliban, Maidan Shar ed infine Kabul. Quando la sera stremato, dopo tappe di una trentina di km al giorno, arrivava ad un precario rifugio annotava particolari del percorso panorami incantevoli fiumi ghiaccati personaggi incontrati di cui schizzava delicati ritratti a penna, i Buddha di Bamiyan con le celle dei monaci, il minareto di Jam della turquoise mountain... poi il colpo di fulmine per un pigro cagnone da pastore e difesa contro i lupi che lo ha accompagnato per 5 settimane, talvolta persino portato in braccio, fino a Kabul. Subito battezzato Babour in onore del mogul. Deciso a portarlo nella natia Scozia e predisposto il viaggio aereo per il giorno successivo alla sua partenza, e' raggiunto dalla notizia che Babour e' morto per perforazione intestinale da osso di agnello, lui che era abituato a mangiare solo pane secco ed acqua dai fiumi ghiacciati rotto a fatica il ghiaccio. Sincera commozione dell' autore! Mille gli episodi, le situazioni pericolose per la vita in balia dei signori della guerra locali, ma la sua abilita' diplomatica e anche un po' faccia tosta lo hanno sempre tirato fuori d'impaccio. Tornato in Afghanistan nel 2004 per istituire la turquoise mountain foundation poi Harvard poi dal 2010 un seggio tory al parlamento poi... Ho letto Bayron the road to Oxiana tutto Chatwin, ma Stewart e' loro pari, forse solo David Gilmour lo ha sintetizzato icasticamente " travelling at its hardest and travel-wraiting at his best" Lunga vita Rory e speriamo sia un prime minister meglio dell'attuale pasticciona.
