Practice Makes Perfect German Pronouns and Prepositions, Second Edition

Herr Swick has a very lucid writing style as I have said before in reviewing other books by this author. His depth of understanding of the German language is phenomenal and his ability to share the intricacies of the language are extraordinary. This book is for the learner who wants to get a firm grasp of some of the nuances of the German language. The subjects covered are quite well done and there are plenty of examples to work through. I like the fact that Herr Swick uses new words in constructing his teaching examples. Not everyone will like this because it necessitates the use of a good dictionary. For me, this increases my vocabulary and I like this feature. I would suggest that this book is for the advanced beginner to the intermediate learner of German but everyone who wants to understand how to use pronouns with impact will benefit from this material.

I'm on chapter 3 and find this useful. I love the layout. It's very spacious and allows room to write translations and answers. I like the repetitiveness of it, which is what I need in order to memorize pronouns. Plus it's very easy to find the answers in the back. The grammar explanations give examples of the dative in English to help those who don't understand these grammar terms.

Another one of Ed Swick's great books. Prepositions are my weak point in German, or one of my weak points I should say. I remember in 7th grade I had to memorize all of the English prepositions, and can still recall them, but as you know, prepositions can have multiple meanings. You take an aspirin FOR a headache, meaning to get rid of it, or prevent it. But you take a tennis racket for tennis, a very different meaning. It just takes self-discipline to tackle the things that are difficult for you, but this book makes it easier to tackle, a lot easier. I like the format, I like everything about it. For me, it fits my way of learning much better than other books.

I am trying to learn German. I bought the whole series to help me practice the basics and to learn the declensions. The words used in the lessons are the vocabulary of someone who already speaks German. There are no English-German vocabulary lists in the lessons nor a glossary at the end of the book. I spend more time looking up words in a bilingual dictionary than I spend doing the lessons. The lessons are great--but be prepared to use a lot of time word-hunting.

This is unquestionably an excellent book. I am using it along with other books in the series for self study of German. This reference has organized the structure of pronouns and prepositions as they relate to the case and gender of nouns and does a very fine job of guiding the native English speaker through what is otherwise a most confusing path. I strongly recommend it, particular for self study. Based on my success with this book I have purchased three more from the series for my continued study and will use all on the Kindle.

I really like this book because there are many exercises to do. It is easy and simple to understand. I would like to see a tape going with this because some of the terms are hard for new people to pronounce. It is a good reference book.

Recommend for anyone with an interest in learning German. Has answer keys in the backs so you can check your work to see if you are on the right track. Great book.

It is truly a great book. I use it for my German students all the time. After completing the book, they truly seem to understand prepositions.

Despite the best efforts of my teachers, this area was definitely my weakest one. Having purchased this book and having decided to start again from scratch, I am presently working my way through this text book and am making good progress. Of all Ed Swick's books, this has been the most helpful to me. Any writer or speaker of the German language will be judged on their pronouns and prepositions and what flows from them. If the reader can master this area, success should follow. To summarise, this book is good value for money.

Ho avuto modo di apprezzare l'analisi degli elementi grammaticali in proposito con la sua completezza e pratica di esercizi. In particolare sono stato interessato ai "Pronominaladverbien" o "Prepositional Adverb", propri del tedesco in quanto sostituiscono in una sola parola la preposizione + pronome o il nome di riferimento. Ad esempio: "auf dem Tisch, auf dem "= "darauf". L'argomento,poi, è ulteriorment ampliato e spiegato. Complessivamente il testo è fondamentale per proseguire in grammatica.
