Great reference for anyone who appreciates fine woodworking.
Beautifully illustrated for each joint technique. Explains when/where it is used. Japanese woodworkers are truly artisans. I can do box joints, but dovetails are beyond my skill level.

A great resource
Our son is a master woodworker and instructor who excited when we gave him this book for Christmas. He is familiar with most of these joints but also found several that he has not seen before and is excited to try. Interest in handcrafted furniture has grown so he is always looking for a chance to show off his skills.

Eye Popping Joinery
Outstanding book. Well produced in paper and cover. The various joinery displayed in this book are phenomenal. After years of woodworking, i have learned and will continue to learning many NEW joinery methods. Most, if not all are beautiful. If you are looking for different methods of joinery on your projects, get this book and keep it local to your shop. Your projects will pop out and give what you have built in the past a much better look.

I have been searching for a good book on Japanese Joinery for a long time and upon reading the description I thought I had found it. I wanted it to use to make furniture, but as it turns out less than 10% of the joints described pertain to case joints. The descriptions and/or diagrams are not as clear as they could be but perhaps after actually starting to make one they may become more so but as a starting point, not so much. If you are looking for carpentry joints there are many, but if you are looking for step by step instructions this is not it.

The Japanese believe that whatever you do, you should do it to the very best of your ability. This admirable maxim, (that we could all do well to emulate), has been skilfully demonstrated in this excellent volume. This fascinating book highlights the superb creativity and skills of Japanese craftsmen, that have been developed over many, many centuries. Having travelled in Japan, I was deeply impressed by the quality of the woodwork, (and metalwork and stonework) that I saw in the shrines, temples, and other traditional buildings. This book shows the usually hidden secrets and intricate complexities of these joints, giving an insight into where they are used, and why they were developed. Traditionally, Japanese carpenters do not glue joints in building construction, and in many traditional items of furniture, and seeing examples of these joints, it is easy to see how the various components all lock together very securely. For the woodworker, this book is a treasure trove of delights - and throws down a very heavy gauntlet to anyone who is prepared to replicate some of the more complex joints!
