I have used VFLs in this design and format previously and this is one of the better ones. It is powerful, at 30MW. I put it on a ~10km fiber loop and I was able to see the laser fairly easily. The description says 30km and the description of the product says 50km, so I don't know how far it would actually go. It is powerful enough for anything I plan to use it for. It does come with a small carrying case/holster which is okay. It also contains a SC to LC adapter so you can connect it to LC connectors as well as SC/ST/FC without the adapter. It also has a "glint" or flashing setting which is especially helpful if you are using it to find a cable or port. This is a great thing to always have around to troubleshoot a problem or just to verify a connection or fiber path. This is an essential tool for someone who works with fiber optic connections and this one works well.

Right out of the box, this was an incredibly simple tool to use. It does *not* come with batteries, it uses 2x AA, but after installing the batteries, it's obvious it isn't just some dim light attachment. I plugged in a 15ft cable just for testing and it was crazy how bright it was. I have a few 100-300ft runs that I intend to test as well when they are not in use, but I expect it will handle those runs just fine - but I will update if anything unexpected comes up. More than once I have been in a situation where I had cable run but did not have my hardware in yet for testing and this would have eased my mind a lot on verifying the line. It's not the highest end tool like it, but for just a quick check or the ability to locate a cable in a bundle, this tool handles the task - for the price and my use-case, it's a good value!

I had some fiber links that I wanted to double check in my patch panel. The quickest way was to use this visual tester to ensure that I had a good run to each rack. I like that it can use any ST connector to LC SC or another ST. Tested this with both Multimode OM1 and Singlemode fiber.
