![Batman: The Motion Picture Anthology 1989-1997 [DVD] [1989]](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71usiJ+Yl3L.jpg)

Box set containing four films from the popular 'Batman' film series. 'Batman' (1989) was the first big screen outing for Bob Kane's caped crusader. The streets of Gotham City are no longer safe for criminals, who are being picked off by a masked vigilante in a rubber suit - dubbed 'Batman' by the press. Reporter Alexander Knox (Robert Wuhl) teams with photographer Vicki Vale (Kim Basinger) in an attempt to discover Batman's true identity - an investigation which leads them to the door of mysterious millioniare Bruce Wayne (Michael Keaton). Meanwhile, crime boss Carl Grissom's (Jack Palance) attempt to rid himself of untrustworthy henchman Jack Napier (Jack Nicholson) does not go according to plan, and after emerging physically - and mentally - disfigured from a vat of chemicals, Napier reinvents himself as the psychotic Joker. In 'Batman Returns' (1992), Oswald Cobblepot was abandoned by his parents as a baby. Thirty three years later, bent on revenge, he returns to Gotham City as the Penguin (Danny DeVito). First he begins a warped campaign to become Mayor, helped by millionaire businessman Max Shreck (Christopher Walken); next, he undertakes a mission to murder every first born son in Gotham - a plan which will avenge his own beginnings. Meanwhile, he has two adversaries to contend with: Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer), the embittered ex-secretary of Max Shreck, and, of course, the old caped crusader himself (Keaton). In 'Batman Forever' (1995), former District Attorney Harvey Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones) is terrorising Gotham City, when a new villain appears on the scene - the Riddler (Jim Carrey). Together they plot to discover Batman's (Val Kilmer) identity, using a device which can probe the human mind. Meanwhile, the caped crusader has been joined by Robin (Chris O'Donnell), whose trapeze-artist family have recently been slain by Two-Face. 'Finally, in 'Batman and Robin' (1997), Batman (George Clooney) and Robin (O'Donnell) have to stop the vengeful Mr Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger) from taking over Gotham City by using his new ice weapon. To make matters worse, the venomous Poison Ivy (Uma Thurman) decides to join forces with Freeze, so making an almost undefeatable double-whammy of a team. Luckily for the caped crusader and his rebellious ward, they can team up with a new tough and courageous new partner - Batgirl (Alicia Silverstone). Review: Good product - Good product. Good movie Review: old and dead? - I made the mistake of getting rid of this anthology, thinking I'd not get any more out of the DVD's. How wrong was that? I needed to view it as a collective work of art. There's nothing lifelike or profound about them, it's not making any large world statement, just that you can watch stuff like this time and again, and still get an enormous amount of fun out of it, you are on a trip to a wonderland of elsewhere. It's highly coloured razzamatazz, the actors obviously thoroughly enjoy themselves, it's almost dancelike in its presentation. Gotham city itself, could be a travesty of New York, but not quite, due to the excellent sets, it takes without apology, a crazy, multidimensional identity of its own. And of course the music makes the background sets, and actors marvelous acting, along with the care of the directors, come to a fantasmagorical (they threw away the mold when they made this) life of its own. However good the three modern versions of Batman are, (and they are good), however serious and dark, whatever profound statements are made, and however emotional the response from the viewers, nothing beats the partylike romping whoop of the first collection. May it go on and on.

old and dead?

Good value set.
Love Batman (1989) and Returns (Keaton & Burton) however I cannot stand the seizure inducing mess that is Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. I appreciated those 2 when I was a lot younger, partly owing to them being in the cinema back then and there being a mass hype over them. But watching them now just gives me a headache. Forever is full of flashing lights and loudness and Batman & Robin.... well... less said the better really. It's a shame because they had the potential and could have carried the saga on nicely but it just didn't happen. Returns will always be my favourite. Has a slightly enchanting feel to it. I know that it was a summer release too but it feels like a Christmassy sort of film: the snow I guess. Anyway, this is a good set however some of the inside sleeve work is incorrect/doesn't correspond to the right film etc but really... who buys a dvd set to look at the inside covers? It is a good set JUST to say that you have all 4 original films but I think that you only really need the first two. Great price for all four.

Great Box Set including all the Batman Movies from the late 80's to late 90's. Box Set looks really nice and would make an excellent present idea for a batman fan. Works perfectly fine and the prize is really good considering it consists of 4 DVD's. Makes for an amazing lazy weekend on the couch when it is cold outside. Love it!
