I’ve dabbled in smart home setups for a while, often getting frustrated by devices that barely communicate with each other or require endless fiddling. The Tapo H100 Smart Hub has been a breath of fresh air — it’s intuitive, reliable, and genuinely makes managing multiple devices effortless. I first bought it to connect my Tapo doorbell camera and a few sensors around the house. Setup was impressively quick — plug in, follow the app instructions, and within minutes everything was linked. Unlike some hubs I’ve tried in the past, it didn’t require multiple firmware updates or confusing pairing steps. The coverage is excellent. I placed the hub in the living room and it easily handled devices spread across the house. I currently have a smart switch, motion sensors, and the doorbell connected, and it’s been flawless. Notifications from the doorbell are immediate, and the chime options are plenty — 19 ringtones to suit different rooms or moods. The sound is loud enough to hear across the house without being annoyingly sharp, which is perfect for everyday use. One thing I particularly appreciate is the energy efficiency. Unlike some hubs that seem to draw more power than I’d like, this one feels unobtrusive, running quietly in the background without adding noticeable electricity usage. The app integration is straightforward, and linking additional devices is simple — I can expand up to 64 devices, which gives plenty of room as my smart home grows. Overall, the Tapo H100 Smart Hub delivers exactly what it promises: easy setup, solid whole-home coverage, and dependable performance. It’s reliable, energy-efficient, and keeps all my Tapo devices working seamlessly together. Whether you’re just starting with a smart home or adding to an existing setup, this hub is an excellent foundation — I’d recommend it without hesitation.

As a hub, it works perfectly and integrated with my eero and echo systems flawlessly. Setup wes a breeze and linking Tapo sensors only takes only a couple of minutes. I have setup the required automations through the Tapo application rather than Amazon Echo and they work perfectly too. (I could setup automations though the Echo) The automations I have setup work flawlessly, unlike my previous brand zigbee devices. It also works as an alarm and a doorbell ringer with different ringtones. It has also linked it to Matter using the supplied QR code. Nice little system.

Update 31/01/24: TP-Link have recently made some great software/firmware updates to much of the Tapo product line. Firstly some degree of local automation is now available, when an automation is created in the Tapo app it will be identified whether or not it will continue to function without an internet connection. Even better news for some, Matter compatibility is now available on the H100 Smart Hub allowing most of the sub-devices to be connected to a Matter controller. This function is still in beta however I have found it to be working well through Home Assistant (where Matter is also still in beta). For those HA users who have been using the Tapo HACS integration I strongly recommend switching to Matter as the polling lag experienced by the Tapo HACS integration does not exist using Matter and it also works entirely locally with no need to connect to TP-Link’s servers. As Matter is still rather new buttons and the water leak sensor currently aren’t supported, but I suspect this is only a matter of time. Original review: The Tapo H100 smart hub is required if you wish to use any Tapo sensors/buttons/switches as these battery powered devices communicate over a ~868MHz connection not WiFi (2.4/5GHz). It is not required if you only have Tapo WiFi plugs, bulbs, cameras etc. The H100 is cheaper (at £15) than many hubs/bridges/gateways but as you would expect from TP-Link is a quality item and easy to setup via the Tapo app. Whether this hub and associated devices will work for you will really depend on what you’re trying to achieve. Automation options in the Tapo app are somewhat limited and are certainly less customisable than other ecosystems. For instance phone notifications cannot be setup for all sub-devices; sensors yes, buttons no. For those using Alexa once the Tapo skill has been installed the sub devices connected become available as triggers which opens up far more possibilities and the capability to control devices across other ecosystems. I tested using the motion sensor (T100) and smart button (S200B) to control some Philips Hue lights and both worked fine, albeit with occasionally a little delay. For those using Home Assistant the Tapo integration currently cannot access any sub devices connected to this hub. Unlike most systems that utilise a hub/bridge/gateway, any buttons or sensors connected to the Smart Hub will entirely cease to function if the internet connection is lost. There is no good reason for this and in my opinion is a very poor decision by TP-Link, local functionality is an absolute necessity for a reliable smart home. Light switches or security sensors not functioning because of a lost internet connection is a really dumb problem to introduce. Curiously this device fails badly with two of the main advertised features; smart doorbell and burglar alarm/deterrent. At the loudest setting the doorbell chime cannot be heard through more than two closed doors in silence, let alone with any background noise. Additionally the smart button does not permit phone notifications meaning you can’t be alerted that way either (this can be achieved via Alexa). The idea of using this in conjunction with some sensors as a burglar alarm is also sadly farcical. It is not loud enough to scare off anyone plus can be easily unplugged by a burglar. It is tricky to rate the H100, if the available sub-devices and automations meet your requirements then this is a good quality and well priced device. However if you were to rate it against some of the headline advertised features it would rate quite low. I’ve been generous as I mostly wanted this as a stand alone system in conjunction with a motion sensor (T100) to notify me by phone and keep a log, which it does well enough.

Great price for this device, easy setup on wifi home network. Once it was connected to the network it was an easy process to setup an automation that sounds this devices ringtone whenever the front doorbell is pressed. Now means that I have two devices that sound a ringtone when someone has pressed the doorbell, this device and the tapo hub that records video to a memory card. No more missed doorbell rings in any part of the house, yipee!!!

Ideal hub to operate my Tapo smart switches and light. Very small and easily plugs in the wall plugs without having to add any cable. Very easy to configure it connects seamlessly to my WiFi and all lights.

This hub does what it is supposed to do. The problem is that no where does it really make clear what that is or at what level it integrates with Alexa. So here I try This hub is used to talked to various tapo devices but not all Essentially those that need a battery. What it does is talk to those battery operated devices. They do not use WiFi which would require a new battery every few weeks if not sooner Instead it uses a lower frequency than wi fi that transmits through walls well and so will also use much less power The hub then talks with Alexa but the Alexa integration is near zero other than asking Alexa to say tell you the temperature of the tapo thermometer Any smart routines have to be set up within the tapo app - which is excellent And talk to other tapo devices which are growing in number and I think tapo is going to survive and go places They are cheap on Amazon and work well Smart plugs because they have access to mains power connect directly to WiFi They can be controlled through Alexa and/or within the tapo app If you only have smart plugs or bulbs you do not need this hub But if you have say a tapi thermometer then you do I have mine set up within the tapo app to detect when the temperature drops below a certain temperature to activate a mains plug switch that a fan heater is plugged into And to turn the the switch off when the heater then gets above a temperature Within Alexa all you can do is ask it to tell you the temperature You cannot currently set up routines within Alexa In summary. I think Tapo devices will survive. The software is good. You only need the hub if talking to battery powered devices And the reason for this is that you would need to replace the batteries every couple of weeks or even less if they connected to wi fi direct

Bought this to use with some Tapo smart light switches and a motion sensor. The great thing is that it’s plug in to a mains socket, and it wirelessly connects to your home wifi network. No trailing Ethernet cables to connect directly to your router. Easy and straightforward set up with the Tapo app and devices can be controlled via Alexa without further set up.

I purchased this to go along with my smart dimmer switches. It feels a little overkill with my current setup having this hub given it also functions as a chime and I’ve nothing I want or need to chime, however it was very simple to setup and get connected quickly and for my use case of aiding my smart switches, it does its job well. My one niggle of dissatisfaction is that that it blocks the switch and one of the USB ports of my wall socket but given that I don’t need to or want to switch it off, it’s not the biggest nuisance in the world.
