Has anyone tried this NIC on a machine running pfsense?

Yes. I have 10+ of these operating in pfsense boxes. In fact as I type this the ingress ethernet and egress ethernet the packets flow through are both of this NIC type. They will appear as: em0 em1 em2 .. (Also work on Opensolaris if anyone is curious)

Does it come with a low profile bracket?

No, I purchased 3 of them and there was not any low profile brackets. Very unhappy about this

If I don't have anymore available PCIe x1 slots, will this work in a PCIe x16 slot?

You can use a PCIe x1 card, or a PCIe x4 card in a PCIe x16 slot. The first 18 pins are all the same. Think of it as "backwards compatible" The only issue is if you use like an x16 in an x8 slot, it will work it will just run as fast as the x8 can handle.
