One of my favorite movies since childhood
What can I say about this movie? Let's start With Sidney Poitier. He is an excellent actor and he is one of the men who was critical to changing how Black actors and actresses were portrayed in film. The film is revolutionary and groundbreaking. This is a film everyone should see.

Five Stars are Not Enough
This movie hits me hard. It takes place in the 1960s, but it has a timeless quality and speaks to every generation. It depicts the transformations that take place in both the teacher and the students during the year they spend together. It is very moving, and the theme song is perhaps one of the greatest movie songs of all time. The movie deserves 10 stars. The acting, the script, the music are all superb and make for an unforgettable movie experience.

To Sir With Magnificence
As I dimly recall of the movie which is on my list of 'to gets' Sidney was originally trying to make ends meet until he could find an engineering job. I don't believe he had any formal background as a teacher but he needed the work. At first he started out as any frustrated teacher until he realized that the only learning students relate to, especially difficult ones, was practical learning! Museums, classroom participation so they'd feel like they were contributing something. Calling them by Mr. and Miss to show respect. The teaching that respect is gotten when given. He taught them the valuable lesson that whatever their background problems were, it was no excuse to be less than what they could be. In the end, the students taught Mr. Poitier more than he ever dreamed when in the last scene he receives his acceptance to a engineering firm. A couple students from the next year's class came in voicing the same "I'm going to take over" arrogance. Sidney tore up his letter realizing that his calling was that of a teacher and judging from his first class, he was a damn good one!We learned what teaching really is. You're born, not made.In a time of teacher strikes when all teachers care about is themselves, To Sir With Love may just demonstrate what teaching was ment to be. I do however remember the awful singing of LuLu one of the students. When she starts warbling, I'll be running to the Principal's Office!

As Splendid and Fantastic as I expected to be!
I'm happy to report that my "To Sir With Love" DVD arrived one day ahead of Schedule. Furthermore: It was every bit as enjoyable and entertaining as I was hoping it would be. Although I first saw the film many years ago on TV: I hadn't forgotten what a splendid performer and singer Lulu was. Also: I felt Sidney Portier delivered a phenomenal Performance! Besides them: The movie is filled with an array of phenomenal performers. Having all those positive qualifications: I heartily recommend "To Sir With Love to all those who still enjoy movies containing substance and a brilliant cast of actors. If the film was remade today using current style: It would undoubtedly be filled with profanity and obscenities of every imaginable kind. Consequently: It's nice to know movies of this nature can still be obtained and enjoyed for their quality and subliminal meanings, rather than a questionable exterior. Therefore: I strongly advise you to purchase "To Sir With Love" while it's still obtainable! I absolutely love it! thank you!

There's a fair bit one could say is “wrong” with this film – it's predictable, clichéd, dated, and not least of all the sixteen-year old school kids are played by actors and actresses who are in reality in their late 'teens or early twenties and look too old for their parts, but nevertheless “To Sir With Love” is still a bleedin' fantastic film. What an amazing cast – Scottish singer Lulu who plays the part of working class Londoner Barbara “Babs” Pegg, does with a very convincing London accent, and she also provides some of the music soundtrack of the film, other cast members include Judy Geeson, Adrienne Posta, Suzy Kendall, Geoffrey Bayldon, Patricia Routledge, Emmerdale's Christopher Chittell, and the star of the film, the very handsome Sidney Poitier, it has a solid if perhaps predictable story, that is told well, and it has some fantastic music. Since I first saw “To Sir With Love” decades ago now, I've always loved the film but hadn't seen it for many years, and I thought I might be taking a risk in watching it again as there might be the possibility that my appreciation of the film could have changed in a negative way – but not a chance! It still is bleedin' fantastic. The music, some of which I suppose sounds somewhat dated in the twenty-first century is still one of the major appeals of the film for me. The first scene as the opening credits roll and drums and a bass-line are heard before Lulu sings “Those schoolgirl days ….” is just brilliant, the music throughout the films is great and the film's title song is one of the most memorable songs that can be heard in a film ever. There are topics that are covered in the film that are just as relevant today as they were in the mid 'sixties – courtesy and respect for everyone else in society, aspirations for individuals, and rebellion (but channelled in the right way). I can only guess how a young cinema audience today would view “To Sir With Love” today, but given that I think the film still has relevance today, I would hope they would view it favourably. But for me, dated or not, and even with its imperfections it's still bleedin' brilliant!

Sidney Poitier plays Mark Thakeray, an unemployed engineer, who reluctantly, takes up a teaching post in an East London school. His class turns out to be a bunch of teenagers ready to leave and go into the outside world of work and realism, who are totally opposed to being taught anything, and totally disregard him as a teacher. This is a classic film made in the mid 60's, and is set in London's East End. Most people have at least heard of this film, but for anyone interested in British films from the 60's this is a must own Blu Ray. There are quite a few character actors in it from the period, and also stars Lulu, who sings the title song. It also stars Judy Geeson, and Suzy Kendall. I have this on dvd, and there is a part where there is a sync issue, that lasts for about three minutes. This has been solved on this Blu Ray, and there are no issues at all. There is a very thin layer of grain, which is more noticeable in the title sequence, after that, it is only noticeable on some scenes, and does not spoil the enjoyment of this film at all, if you had watched this film in the cinema this is how it would have looked. This release also includes a dvd version, and for some obscure reason, the cases that have been used for all of Powerhouse's releases, have a plastic lip, which one disc partially sits underneath. It is very fiddly trying to get this disc out. It is very similar to the Universal Monster box set on Blu ray, so anybody who has that will know what I mean. There is also a host of special features on this disc, that lasts for about an hour. Picture Quality is suburb, with a sharp image, and natural colours. This release, has been transferred in it's original aspect ratio of 1.85:1. Sound is in the original mono. Final word. If you have this on dvd, this is worth the upgrade. Highly Recommended.
