I think that heavily depends on the types of exercise you are doing and if the mats are on top of a carpeted surface or a flat hard surface. If you are planning to do any quick movement and change in direction they might have some trouble stay interlocked but for example jumping jacks with shoes on is completely fine. They are durable enough for that.
