The suspense, the atmosphere, and the creeping sense of dread had everyone desperate to know what would happen next. I couldn’t resist and ended up finishing the book myself in the car on the way to the coast yesterday – it was just too good to put down. The story follows Fliss and her friends on a school trip to Whitby, where they’re staying at the eerie Crow’s Nest Hotel. Oddly, there is no Room 13… or at least, that’s what they’re told. But at midnight, the door of the linen cupboard next to Room 12 seems to transform into something far more sinister. And while this mystery deepens, strange changes are happening to Ellie-May Sunderland – changes that feel dark, dangerous, and otherworldly. Swindells masterfully builds tension and suspense, making this a true page-turner. It’s spooky, atmospheric, and the perfect blend of mystery and horror for young readers (and adults too!). My class are loving it. Looking forward to finishing it with them. If you want a chilling, unputdownable read with just the right amount of scare factor, Room 13 is a brilliant choice.
