I have a toshiba sata from a laptop. if i use this cable, will the power come from the usb or will i have to have a separate power supply to the hdd?

Yes it’s self powered and a USB 2.0 socket works fine

If the laptop HDD is a SATA one, which is probably the case, yes. Also, in this case, the external power supply is not strictly needed, as power consumption of laptop (2.5”) HDD is low enough to be handled by USB. That’s not the case for 3.5” HDD
