I mix up the batter in a Pyrex bowl ahead of time so the wide-mouth opening is appreciated. Some dispensers do not have a wide opening & if you're dumping from a bowl, you may have a mess. I don't find the lid necessary, but it's also used to sit the dispenser on between batches so it'll catch any drips. Unlike other reviews, I didn't experience much dripping at all. My homemade batter is thick. If your batter is thin, it might drip, simply due to the design where it pours out. Any batter remaining in the tiny funnel dispensary will likely drip out a bit. There would be no way to avoid that. I did find that as I neared the end of the batter, I needed to use a spoon or spatula to push the remaining amount out of the hole, but again, my pancake batter is pretty thick. It’s easy to use, easy to clean and helps make perfect pancakes and waffles. It doesn’t work too well to mix batter in, although I have done so. Best to mix batter in another bowl and then pour into the batter dispenser. Top rack dishwasher safe for the body, and hand wash for the plug. **Q: Does this work on thicker liquids like pecan pie filling?** A: Wouldn't recommend it for anything with lumps or pieces of anything... didn't even work with blueberry pancake batter. We had to add the blueberries to the pancakes on the griddle after the fact. **Q: Can this be washed in a commercial dishwashing machine?** A: I have washed it in a home dishwasher. I do not know if it is designed for the higher temperature water if a commercial dishwasher. I would contact the company for answers. **Q: Is this made out of all plastic?
