I haven't washed it yet I normally do that immediately before putting bedding items on the bed, but he took it and put it on before I had a chance to do so. There was no chemical smell of any type. The set looks exactly as pictured. As others mentioned, there is no way the pillow cases will hold king sized pillows. I put standard/queen pillows in the cases, and they fit well. The pillows I bought were $ 3.99 each at Target since they are more for appearance as opposed to one's you may sleep on. Also, I bought the king set for a queen bed because other reviewers stated the comforter fits more like a queen.
