ICY BOX External 4-Port USB-C Case for 2.5 inch & 3.5 inch SSD and Hard Disk Drives, USB 3.1 (Type-C, Gen 2), JBOD, Fan, SATA, Aluminium, Black

I had three SATA 2tb drives in a Parity Storage Space (kind of like raid 5) my PC tower and wanted to put them in a USB3/Thunderflash box for use on my PC laptop and PC tower. This could not have been easier, popped the drives in, turned it on and HEY PRESTO, the Storage Space was seen instantly on both devices. Copying a 10gb file from the ext device to my laptop took 24 seconds!!! Really fast. Eat that, e-sata/usb.

Firstly the shoulder screws, provided to attach the handles to the disk chassis don't work if the disk has blind mounting holes.. The screws are too long so protrude and prevent the disk entering the enclosure. Luckily I have plenty of other screws. It comes with trays for 2.5" disks, but not for 3.5", so the drive insertion mechanism has nothing in particular to guide and disks towards the connector at the back. And not all drives are the same thickness, hence you have wiggle and 'feel' about for the connector, I can see that breaking easily after any significant use. Lastly. First disk worked. Added a 2nd and after half an hour it started making strange noises. It was resetting every 10s (and I mean completely powering off and on again). Unplugged and re-plugged - half an hour later did the same. Checked the connections. No problems there so I can only assume the internal PSU does not like powering two disks or the 2nd disk is faulty, perhaps true, is was a very old one. As the disks start up the LEDS all dim on the front like sometimes they go out completely and the disk spin up tries again. So, turned it off and bought another, new disk. Couple days later, it arrived tried that. Did the same. Hmm. OK, that's a PITA. I hope it's not damaging the disks! Tried combinations - same. Just out of frustration Ii tried all three disks and then found it won't power on (powers on for about 1 second then off again) Returned for a refund and ordered a slightly more expensive model. I got this to re-arrange my NAS disks. So no time to mess about as I need to do this fast as running out of storage space. My guess is that the device is not really designed for 3.5" disks and has an internal supply only rated for 2.5" lower power drives you get in laptops and not hefty enterprise rated 3.5" ones. Shame as this is all in the SATA spec.

Nice little box works with no dramas transfer speed good only bottle neck is the hardcover I’m using guess I should get some new ones

Ne ho comprato uno nel 2021 che sto ancora usando e uno nel 2025. Per me ottimo e non ho percepito la rumorosità di cui alcuni parlano. Ce li ho entrambi sulla scrivania davanti al naso e contengono sia HD da 3,5 pollici, sia SD da 2,5. Mai avuto un problema. L'unico "difetto" è il connettore elettrico su un fianco, che non permette di affiancare i due case uno accanto all'altro con niente o poco spazio. Per il resto, tutto ok.

Ik gebruik hem voor video editing en ik heb nu genoeg ruimte. Hij werkt erg snel en goed.

Il héberge 4 SSD, connectique USB-C Thunderbolt 3, donc accès immédiat aux contenus (photos). Fabrication exemplaire, tout métal. Allez juste un truc gênant, le connecteur d'alimentation sur le côté, ce qui augmente son encombrement.

Har, till en början, stoppat i fyra 3,5"-diskar för åtkomst och sortering av mestadels äldre data. Två gamla interna hårddiskar - 2TB (7200rpm) & 3TB (5400rpm) - och två externa jag tagit ur deras höljen, en riktigt gammal 1TB WD-disk och en relativt ny (nåja, ett par år) 4TB Intenso-disk. Efter enkel fysisk installation och inkoppling via medföljande USB-C gick allt igång hur bra som helst på första försöket (Windows 10). Flyttar filer mellan (och avlastar en del från m2-lagringen i nya datorn dit), hastigheterna tycks vara så bra man kan förvänta sig med dessa hårddiskar. Har flyttat många och stora filer samt kört både WinDirStat och Czkawka (ett ganska intensivt dubblett-sökarprogram), hittils inte noterat något oroväckande. Andra recensioner har klagat på fläktljudet men jag har inte märkt att min ens rampat upp än (hastighet på auto) och tycker inte att den för något nämnvärt oväsen över hårddiskarnas egna oundvikliga mekaniska ljud - ska nog fyllas med SSDs innan man börjar oroa sig över fläktljudet, men blir det vidare varmt då...? Anyway. Har lådan på skrivbordet bakom en av mina skärmar och där kan den gott få stå kvar för enkel åtkomst vid behov, ska inte vara igång hela tiden framöver. Känns välbyggd i plast och metall. Lagom tyngd (står så klart redigt stadigt full av 3,5"-diskar). Så liten den kan vara och rymma hårddiskarna + fläkt. Okej interface fram med blå LEDs och några få knappar. Vet så klart inte hur det ser ut från tillverkarens sida men som köpare och vad jag tycker mig få för pengarna kunde den kanske fått kosta ett par hundralappar mindre. Är i vilket fall helnöjd med produkten jag har nu!
