What is the difference between Nylon and wood tips?

Nylon has more ping on cymbals, less wear and tear on tips, but some say tips are prone to flying off a lot. Wood has better rebound on toms and snare, more control over sound, has more wear and tear if you play hard. I prefer Vic Firth Metal (wood tip) for practice and 5A or 5B (wood tip) for playing. The 7A is perhaps better size for small kids, would not recommend for adult or teenager even with small hands.

Will these be good for a beginner band drummer?

Yes, they will be good for a beginner drummer. But please check with the instructor first before buying this size of drumsticks. Some band instructors want a different size like 5A or 2B. Thanks!

What are best for 14 year old beginner?

5A is what I have used for many years now, but learned in marching band with 2B, and later went to 7A for concert band, jazz band and orchestra. Choose a medium thickness that fits the child's grip well and maybe try 2 or three sizes to compare at the music store
