Will this fit the oven NN-SN973S?

Yes, that is the oven we bought it for. It takes a little work to put it together, there is a vent you have to fold and attach to the microwave so that the steam doesn't get trapped in the cabinetry. We had to cut the hole in our cabinet a little bigger to fit the trim kit, but we knew we were going to have to make adjustments since the NNSN973S was taller than the one we were replacing. We are happy with it and it looks very nice with our microwave and the other stainless steel ovens in our kitchen. When you are folding the vent make sure you fold it in the right direction. Apparently on some microwaves it goes on the right and some it goes on the left. On ours it went on the left and we started to fold it for the right. It was sturdy enough we could refold it. However it does seem to be kind of a kludge. It's the only negative I found with the trim kit and once it is installed no one sees it.

I don't get this - the inside dimensions are just over 13.5" - but all the 1250w microwaves Panasonic sells have a 14" height - does the door open?

I have NN-SE982S (2.2cu, 1250w) microwave oven. The specification says 19 7/16" (D) x 23 7/8" (W) x 14" (H) of dimension but the door is exactly 13" in height. The inside dimension of this trim is close to 13.75" in height, so you should have enough room. 14"(H) is about right from top of oven to the bottom of supporting legs. Hope this is clear.
