Is this drive actually redundant at 8TB or do you have to reformat to get redundancy.

The 8TB mode would be RAID 0. You would have to switch/reformat to get RAID 1, which would then halve the capacity to 4TB (same data written to each drive, mirroring it).

Does anyone know what the "enterprise class" hard drives that are used?

G-Technology is owned by HGST, a subsidiary of Western Digital, so they would be using WD Enterprise drives, SATA, 7200rpm, etc

Does anyone have any thoughts or experience regarding how loud the internal fan is?

Contrary to everyone else, I don't think the internal fans are "quiet". It's noticeable but not extraordinarily loud, drive spin ups are louder than the fan. The overall combined noise from both fan and the drives is about what you'd expect.

Does this work with a Thunderbolt PC?

Yes it does… but the drive still comes pre-formatted in Mac Journaled format so you'll have to format the drive for your PC OS.
