Does this work on Ubuntu 14.04?

Hello, No, this BrosTrend AC1L Linux wifi adapter does NOT support Ubuntu 14.04 old version. It is compatible with newer version Ubuntu16.04 and 18.04 and later version, it also supports Linux Mint / Debian / Raspbian / Kali-Linux / Xubuntu and Lubuntu...etc. 
Please note that we provide Linux Support Ticket for this model and 2 years warranty.

Will it work with a raspberry pi 4b? i have the 2018 board where only the wifi doesn't work. it see the wifi, but it won't attach. will this help it?

Hello, BrosTrend Linux wifi adapter works with raspberry pi 4b. We currently provide drivers for Debian based Linux OSes, such as Ubuntu, Kali Linux and Linux Mint. Internet connection is a need for driver installation.
Before you use this Linux wifi adapter, please disable your built-in wifi card.

Is this brostrend ac1l plug-and-play compatible with linux mint 20, or does it need "compiling" or other actions to work?

Hello, BrosTrend AC1L Linux USB WiFi adapter does NOT support plug-and-play on Linux OS. You need to install the driver manually. Currently our drivers work with these following OSes:
Ubuntu16.04/16.10/17.04/17.10/18.04/18.10/19.04/19.10/20.04/20.10, Debian 8/9/10, Linux Mint 18/19/20, LMDE 1/2/3/4, Kali, Raspberry Pi OS 8/9/10, MATE, GNOME, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Ubuntu Studio, Budgie, Kylin, MX Linux, Pop! OS, Elementary OS, Zorin OS, KDE neon, antiX Linux, Q4OS, Parrot OS, PureOS, Bodhi, deepin, Linux Lite, SparkyLinux, Peppermint OS, Devuan; Windows 10/8.1/8/7/XP; MAC OS X 10.9-10.14. 
Hardware supported: PCs (x86_32, x86_64), Raspberry Pi 2+ (armhf, Kali aarch64), Odroid, VirtualBox.

Please kindly note that an Internet connection is a need for the driver installation. Our drivers work with kernels up to and including 5.8.
