Would prefer concave buttons
I started out with the grip master light tension. This was too much resistance for my little finger, so I bought the grip master extralight tension. The combination of these two units allowed me to gradually strengthen my fingers to the point that I was ready for the medium tension (seven pounds resistance). I decided I would buy the more expensive grip master PRO unit with seven pounds resistance. I like it, but I'm not sure it's preferable to the slightly less expensive REGULAR grip master unit. The rubber surface on the buttons is easier on my fingertips, but because the buttons are convex rather than concave, my fingers tend to slide off the buttons more than on the regular grip master, which has concave but non-rubber buttons. Both units seem reasonably durable, and they are inexpensive enough from Amazon that if I ever wear one of them out, I can buy another one with no problem. This is a great way to strengthen your fingers, and it has improved my ability to play the piano and the guitar significantly within about six weeks of use. I keep the units in my briefcase and use them when I am reading something at work. This does not interfere with my reading, and it allows me to give my fingers a good workout. It has also improved my speed and control typing on a computer keyboard. I'm not sure which is preferable - the regular grip master or the grip master pro. I think you would probably be happy with either one. I do like the shape of the rubber surface that presses against the palm of my hand better on the grip master pro than on the regular grip master. If I had to do it again, I think I would buy the regular grip master with the concave buttons. NOTE: Be sure to use this device by pushing the buttons with your fingerTIPS, not the flat part of your fingers. You will not be able to handle as much resistance this way, but it will strengthen your fingers in a different way, and in a way that is important to playing a musical instrument.

This is an amazing product, I started out using the light version ...
This is an amazing product, I started out using the light version a few years ago, and now I have upgraded my way to the heavy version. This is about 10X better than the non-pro version of the gripmaster, it fits the palm better, has more even resistance, and most importantly, isnt squeaky and annoying. I started using these to build up my grip strength for weightlifting since most weights I was lifting fatigued my forearms and fingers faster than the muscle I would be training. Now, I don't have that issue anymore, in fact, my forearms and hands are probably the most developed and rock solid muscles I have on my body. This thing seriously works, and fast. There are also some programs you can look up on the internet to find different ways to train individual muscles in your forearms and hands. This works great before workouts to get your hands ready for stabilizing heavy weight, and I even use it like a stress ball sometimes. I usually throw it in my pocket and use it on long drives or bored in the waiting room or something like that. Hands down probably one of my favorite amazon purchases, amazing price and quality for how much use it gets. don't second guess yourself, just buy one already.

They're ok, but have some quirks.
It's really nice, small form factor, works out the muscles well. Just 2 cons on this device: 1- All the springs are the same tension. That means the max tension of this device is not 4x9LBS, but 3x9LBS, as the 3 bottom springs bottom out before the 4 top ones do. It also means your pinky has a much harder time to work out than your index, or middle finger. When you buy the light version of this, is great for pinky, but lousy for index/middle/ring finger. The red (medium tension) gripper is good for the ring finger, but somewhat basic for index and middle finger, and hard for pinky. in other words, if you're like me, you'll have to buy several to train a hand. 2- The bottom springs are pretty useless. They actually tilt the device when training individual fingers. The company also sells a mid, and a basic version of this device (this is the Pro device). The mid device and the pro device both have the same issue. When the device tilts, it tends to slip out of the hand. The basic version does not have this bottom spring set; and feels more stable in the hand, but doesn't have the higher resistance tension... 3- The bottom rubber doesn't feel very stable in the hand. It's very narrow, and sometimes tends to slide in the hand (esp when sweaty). The top has 4 buttons covered with rubber. It feels nicer than the mid-quality brothers for the medium tension (9LBS) or up. If you want to go for light, consider the basic, or mid-quality grippers, as they are a few $ cheaper, and quality wise make very little difference. Aside from these quirks, these grippers are very good. I bought 3 sets, but for a regular male, I would recommend starting out with the red version (medium strength). If you do regular workouts, are athletic built, consider skipping the regular, and head for heavy, or x heavy!

Great little piece of hardware!
I ordered the Gripmaster Pro to improve my fretting hand strength. I'm double-jointed on the last joint of my ring finger, and really wanted something to improve my finger stability and individual articulation on the ring and pinky fingers. I had purchased the Planet Waves Varigrip earlier, and thought it was ok. But as soon as I opened and started using the Gripmaster Pro I immediately saw and felt a difference. The build quality and materials are noticeably better. They built it better than it had to be, which is always a good sign. Don't mess around with any of the other grip strengtheners... this is the one you want! Make sure to get the Pro version, and plan on stepping up to the heavier tensions before long. The difference in my finger strength and dexterity is noticeable. I have no qualms about recommending this item. I'll be stepping up to the next tension level within the week.
