That coating blocks harmful ultraviolet and Infrared light from entering the optic path of your projector. The lens in this housing does not have that protective coating. As a result, on an Optoma projector (at least), the unit will start flickering after about 30 seconds and then shut down with a lamp error. After much frustration (2 bulbs ordered on Amazon), I read about this common problem and replaced the clear housing lens with the lens from my old housing and it now works. However, the protective coating breaks down over time. So, using my old housing lens will probably cause the lamp to have a shorter life.
