Performance Tool W80578 Self-Powered Timing Light, Black

I saw some reviews about the light not being bright enough, and I'll admit the flashlight portion that isn't LED is awful, basically useless besides checking if the unit is turned on or not - that being said the TIMING light portion is LED and bright enough unless you're in direct sunlight. This little travel kit works great for me to bring to the race track and since my car has a rear mounted battery it is a pain to find a positive terminal for a normal unit. The top that turns this on and off is a bit finicky but you figure it out pretty quick and get to timing!

It works as described. If I had to be critical I would say that it could be brighter. Interesting note. One thing I noticed that made a huge difference was the fact that it had two lights inside. One for timing and one as a general purpose flash light. I could have done without the flash light since I have a number of them in the shop, however it impacts the way the device operates. Since there are two lights inside neither one of them is on the center axis of the lens. The result of that off axis location is that the beam does not emit directly on center as one would expect. By moving the light and rotating it you can find the bright spot of the strobe. Until I did this I thought the device was broken, it makes that much difference! The light is not very bright however it is handy for checking to see if the batteries are still good. In my humble opinion it would be better to eliminate the second bulb and place the strobe at the proper focal point on the lens. An Led could be used to check for battery voltage.

Works as it should better then other guns i bought

I bought this for my 1951 Ford flathead. I like the idea that it didn’t rely on the 6 V electrical system, but it had batteries. I’ve been messing with this thing for two days and it just won’t strobe. I know it’s not a problem with spark to the number one cylinder cause actually the engine runs fine. I’ve always timed this with a vacuum gauge, but I bought this light because I wanted to actually see how close I was. The light just shines like a bad flashlight. It doesn’t strobe at all. I’m pretty disappointed. I wish someone could tell me what’s wrong with it.

The timing light works but the bulb in it sucks. Talk about DIM! I'm honestly disappointed.

Good tools definitely worth the price for it. Just remember battery sold separately

Great tool, easy to time outboard engines as it’s battier powered, as you would expect the strobe can’t be seen in bright sunlight but that’s nothing I wouldn’t expect.

I used it for timing engine and it worked like I expected it to do.

Only used it a couple of times so far but it seems to work fine. Would definitely recommend it very reasonably priced and quick delivery. Will be well happy with it as long as it carries on the same! Being a torch as well is handy too!

I bought this timing light for my Jaguar V12 engine. This has to be one of the worst engines to time as it has to be checked from under the car with the engine running at 3000 rpm. Plus the battery is in the trunk so my thought was the single wire, self powered design would be ideal. I received the timing light in the standard blister pack that everyone hates but to my surprise it popped open easily. First thing to check was whether the wire was long enough to reach from the plug wire, around the engine and underneath. Happy to discover it reached ok. Popped in a set of new batteries and got to work. This light worked just fine with only one caveat; the light is just not bright enough. Under the car in the garage with I was able to check timing but I can imagine difficulty in brighter situations. I docked 1 star for this reason only. Other than that i would recommend this timing light.
