Limited vinyl LP repressing in gatefold jacket. Thriller is the sixth solo studio album by Michael Jackson. It was released by Epic Records on November 30, 1982, as the follow-up to Jackson's critically and commercially successful 1979 album Off The Wall. Thriller explores similar genres to those of Off The Wall, including pop, post-disco, rock and funk. Recording sessions took place on April to November 1982 at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angeles with a production budget of $750, 000, assisted by producer Quincy Jones. Seven singles were released from the album, all of which reached the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. In just over a year, Thriller became-and currently remains-the best-selling album of all time, with estimated sales of 65 million copies worldwide. It has become the first album ever to be certified 32 times multi-platinum for U.S. sales, marking more than 32 million sales shipped. マイケル・ジャクソンの『Thriller』が発売されたのは、中学1年生だった1982年12月。私がその衝撃的な音に触れたのは、翌1983年の春のことでした。 それまでは歌謡曲中心だった私の世界に、突如として海を越え、「Billie Jean」のあの不穏でクールなベースラインとムーンウォークが飛び込んできました。続いて「Beat It」の歴史的なギターリフが鳴り響き、私の音楽観は根底から覆されたのです。 その後、収録された9曲中7曲がシングルカットされ、すべてが大ヒット。ビルボード37週1位、グラミー賞8部門制覇、そして史上最も売れたアルバムという、挙げれば切りがないほどの金字塔を打ち立てたモンスター・アルバムです。 当時の私は、クラスメイトにレコードをカセットテープに録音してもらい、擦り切れるほど聴き込みました。この出会いによって、私の趣味は完全に歌謡曲から洋楽へとシフト。中学から高校1年頃までは、Wham!の『Make It Big』と並ぶ「人生の双璧」として君臨していました。 以来、CD、SACD、そして高解像度のハイレゾ（flac 176.4kHz/24bit、DSD 2.8MHz）と、メディアを変えながら40年以上付き合い続けてきました。 最近、改めてレコード盤を購入し針を落としてみましたが、その鮮烈な音像に再び驚かされました。 オープニングを飾る「Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'」の強烈なファンク、洗練されたR&Bバラードの「Baby Be Mine」や「The Lady In My Life」、ハードロックの衝撃「Beat It」、最高のベースラインの一つとも称される「Billie Jean」、そしてAORの極致「Human Nature」。一曲一曲が異なるジャンルの最高到達点でありながら、アルバムとして一つの巨大な物語を形成しています。 80年代前半の作品の中には、今聴くと古さを感じるものもありますが、『Thriller』に関しては驚くほどタイムレス。一切の古臭さを感じさせない圧倒的なスケール感に満ちています。 レコードで聴き直すことで、このアルバムこそが私の「洋楽への扉」を開いてくれた、永遠に色褪せない記念碑的な作品であることを確信しました。
