The perfect controller for the job i do
I have a lot of experience using different controllers for my DJ work and i have got to say that as far as the lower end of high performing deck controllers, the Numark Platinum FX is certainly one of the better pieces of equipment i have ever had the pleasure to own and work with. let me take you through both the pros and cons of what i have experienced so far for this piece of equipment: PROS: ) Has options to plug directly into the controller itself instead of trying to work out the audio channels for your audio cue. this makes mixing sounds and previewing them so much better. )AUX cables for external speakers. super convenient to have as i can plug in amps and even a subwoofer if i want to without having to go through extra steps to make sure my computer has the ability to run it. )external microphone jack. so now i can actually put in the ability to use a stage microphone which in most cases especially when trying to make announcements or speak during parts of a mashup im making, i can do so without the curse of having weird background noises from a computer mic set up. )smooth and easy to use hardware. picking this up and using it is easy enough as long as you have a basic understanding already of how things work. being able to run 2 decks for songs then 2 separate decks so i can play loops and stems in addition to the music opens up the possibility to mix matching and remixing music for me i was not able to before. and now CONS: )as well made and intuitive this controller can be, shifting between decks 1 and 3 as well as 2 and 4 comes with some difficulty. you have to push down on the shift key then while holding it you press scratch and that tells the hardware that your now using the other deck on that particular side that you pushed the buttons on. as simple as it may seem, it can be difficult, especially during critical moments when trying to execute a drop that requires the coordination of 2 decks in addition to the primary deck playing its song i dont see why it wouldnt make more sense to introduce a toggle switch or even just have a completely different set of buttons that all you have to do is push it. for that matter... why is the shift key and the scratch button all the way apart on opposite ends of each deck? why not just have them closer and positioned so i dont have to use 2 hands or awkwardly stretch my hand to just to shift to the other deck. )buttons and slides and toggles sometimes dont register. what i mean by this is if i swap decks real fast and try to twist a couple of dials and drop the volume down if i move to fast or dont have everything positioned just right when i make my swaps and audio changes the commands sometimes dont register in the hardware so the software wont register either. this leads to undesired overlap of sounds sometimes ruining an otherwise perfectly good mix recording or the perfect set up to a drop or well executed fade out in a song transition or failure to transition a song correctly. ) make the FX buttons customizable. as nice as it is to have the flanger and phaser and what have you readily available, i dont have the ability to change those buttons from those functions to instead run something like noise or pitch/speed changes on the fly when i want and need them to happen. if i go through the settings of my software and painsakingly make those changes that means i have to change the function of my FX buttons through a long and tedious process that during a DJ set i frankly dont have the time to deal with or do. so its either your stuck with your preset FX effects from the start of your set till the end or risk fumbling while trying to fight your software and switch decks in a difficult way OVERALL: Its a good piece of hardware and as frustrating as it can be in its moments, it also has brought along some of my most incredible sounds and transitions. i would most certainly recommend this controller to anyone however, best to get experience with maybe a nuwmark mixtrack pro 3 or something first and get used to playing with only 2 decks at a time before taking on this beast and its 2deck to 4 deck shift key set up. Thank you Numark for this excellent piece of equipment!

WANT TO GET STARTED WITH A DJ CONTROLLER, YOUR SEARCH IS OVER!!!
Absolutely Superb! I am no headline DJ by any means, nor will I ever be, I just play at being one in Second life. But, play is play and simply throwing a bunch of tracks into a playlist with a standard 5 second fade between tracks is not really "playing" dj so controller it is. I didnt want to throw a lot of money at it, so bought a second hand intro controller from a well known audio brand ;) and although it was fun for a few days the severely limited functions very quickly became annoying, so was looking for a few models up from that same brand when I happened upon a comparison with this controller which indicated this is better, and about half the price of a second hand one of the other brand! So, with free returns there was nothing to lose trying it, I can order it and play for a couple of days, find the limits and return it and look for something else. Once I got the thing plugged in, even before that, I figured it wont be going back! If I had to cut it back to the one thing that makes it shine I would have to say it is, errr, well, the whole damn thing! The jogs are just sooooo smooth, much bigger, the displays are lovely eye candy and useful for me and a beginner to have the info right there on the controller under my nose. The performance pads are just night and day different, for a start there’s none of that clickety click of the other controller, maybe a tad on the stiff side for my aged finger bones but not to the point I am going to break any, with buttons for hot cues, auto loops, fader cuts and samples, the software I use ,Mixxx, further divides those into 3 sets by either pressing the button, shift pressing or double/ long pressing. So that gives an impressive number of functions from the pads! The almost full size tempo sliders make it real easy to dial in a beat match accurately, and you can adjust the scale from 8, 16 or 50% right on the controller if you do need more control. There is no "bump" at the neutral position which is a little disappointing but not a deal breaker, but I must say it is more than a little annoying that the slider is wider than the printed markings! Come on, at the very least print the centre mark wider so you can see at a glance you are in the neutral zone if you are not including a tactile indicator! The 4 deck control is much easier to use, personally I would have preferred a single button press for change deck and shift press to toggle scratch mode, but of course I can remap that in my software should I need it. Some indicator of which deck is active would also have been very very helpful, its quite easy to get lost! The mixer of course comes with the usual’s, low-mid-high eq, channel gains, headphone cue gain and mix, it has 6 fx buttons which again I can map in my software, currently I have them set to toggle 3 effects in the chain on either deck, I can set both fx chains to affect both decks and then have 6 effects on the buttons, its flexible. The fx section has a wet/dry mix and beats button which changes the beat linked effects in sorato, in mixxx it operated the meta knob for the effect. The fx section also has toggle switches to activate the selected effect, NICE, slide the toggle toward you to temp enable the effect and let go to turn off, or push it away from you to latch it on hands free, should be a standard feature on all controllers IMO At the top of the mixer section is the browser controls, click the selector and rotate to pick a track, press the l/r load button to cue it up,double tap the load button for instant double of the other deck, sweet. There are dedicated buttons on each deck for loop in/out marking, loop, reloop, 1/2 and x2 buttons to adjust the loop, very nice! Few other bits you would expect, mic gain, but that is hardware controlled so does not feed back to the PC for streaming, its only in the RCA signal to speakers so no use to me as I stream to shoutcast. top right is master gain, of course there are sync, cue and play buttons for each deck, and pitch bend buttons if you dont want to use the outer jog to do it, dont know why you wouldn’t though :) So, yeah, I think its fairly obvious already but for me, just dipping my toes tentatively into the world of DJ for a bit of fun, this thing is just mind numbingly good fun! Things have changed a lot since the 70's when my pal and I had two vinyl decks and some flashy lamps along with the ultimate creation of an infinity box. Search the tube for "Numark Mixtrack Platinum FX - DJ Performance" and see what you can do! Yeah you could probably use this for professional use, one dj I spoke to said they still have it despite having pro equipment and have used it for sets when there has been issues with the other gear, but really its a very capable beginner controller at a very affordable price, it has everything I can imagine ever needing (but never say never, who knows where this road will take me) and to be honest I have had 225 quids worth of entertainment from it already HAHAHA if you are like me and just want to start learning how to DJ just buy it, bite the bullet, honestly its a cracking good bit of kit you will love it.
