Genki 1: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese – A Comprehensive Beginner's Resource
Genki 1 is a widely acclaimed textbook designed for beginners embarking on their Japanese language learning journey. Structured into 12 chapters, it covers essential grammar, vocabulary, kanji, and practical dialogues, providing a solid foundation for learners aiming for proficiency at the JLPT N5 level. The textbook's clear explanations, engaging exercises, and accompanying audio resources make it suitable for both classroom settings and self-study. Its structured approach helps learners build confidence in reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. The inclusion of cultural notes also enriches the learning experience, offering insights into Japanese customs and daily life.

It's thorough but not always user-friendly
You'll probably need to have already studied Japanese a little, at least to the point of having grasped basics plus being able to read Hiragana and Katakana. Don't worry if you can't read these as there's plenty of help but, if you're a slacker and only rely on Romaji this is absolutely not the study book for you until you bridge a few gaps in fundamental basics. It doesn't really cover anything at all such as colors, animals or vocabulary like that and instead it has more mature themes aimed at young adults with good examples from the real world. It's heavy on showing you rules and reasons and so long as you've already put a bit of time in studying Japanese prior to this book, you should sail through relatively easily but, it's all there laid out in simple terms if not. I can't give this book five stars and here's why. The activities require you to use information from multiple pages and the authors haven't provided reminders, word boxes or anything to jog your memory as to how you can successfully complete questions and activities and because of this, I find I need to use my fingers to keep open certain pages that contain various rules and/or grammar, or I'm using multiple pieces of paper as bookmarks. I find this absolutely infuriating and time wasting which brings me to my next point. If you find you ever need to use the internet to understand something your textbook hasn't explained, included or made easy to find, there's a problem somewhere with the layout and content of the book. Some pieces of crucial information are glanced over also and not given consideration enough to have thorough activities. My big issue is the questions and activities not having reminders or word boxes etc immediately next to the questions and activities. It's so frustrating hunting back through chapters propping pages open with fingers and paper. What's needed is a bit of a layout rethink in future additions because although all the information is there, it's often scattered around and there may well have been a lot of time since you last covered something, then it needs to be included in a question or activity. There's actually space enough for a bit of a think about making the questions and activities more user friendly and time efficient. We really shouldn't be losing minutes in a study session to hunting down reminders to help make answers! So, some positives are that the audio that comes with this book plus apps, they're great! The diagrams and pictures are too. Although the book is designed for class use, it's possible to study by yourself. I highly recommend this book however, for the reasons I've outlined with fingers propping open pages, I can only give it four stars.

A great textbook to learn Japanese especially if you’re a university student. The book explains well so it’s easy to understand. The vocabulary is available at the end of each chapter so it’s easier to memorize or refer to if needed. I’m learning Japanese by myself and I find the book a great reference to learn

I thought this Genki Textbook together with the workbook would be a nice combination, but it is not really. The method is far too complicated and there seems to be no structure. In the textbook things are explained in really short ways, with very strangely build up exercises to learn. not very much examples with new grammar as well. Then there is the workbook which seems to have 2 parts and it is never clear to me when to use which. But the most frustrating of the Genki books I feel, is the fact that they are trying to teach you far too much at once. When you've finally mastered the hiragana and katagana in just a few pages....they actually expect you to start reading everyting in them. So when there is a vocabulary list where you can memorise words, the words will be written in Hirgana or even Kanji! Wherease I just want to start learn in how to say "Bank" "postoffice" "school". Now I first have to decypher the Hiragana or Katagana signs, before I know the word. Same goes for grammar explanation. If you want to explain to people how the "ni" , "de" and "o" particles work, the exercies in the workbook shoudl NOT be written in hiragana/Katagana or Kanji. I have a hard enough time trying to find the right ways to build a sentence, without having to decypher and then translate everything. This is actually really slowing me down as it would be so much better to just learn grammar in English and do the exercices in romaji. I find explanations on the internet also far better than the rather short and complicated ones in Genki.
