Everyone knows NASA's now retired Space Shuttle. But few outside the aviation/rocketry community know the craft or the man that provided key theoretical underpinnings for their propulsion systems and the principle of the lifting body. Sänger's proposal presents an absolutely fascinating, revolutionary chapter in the history of aviation. Myhra has devoted much energy to writing a stack of books recording the stories of such efforts.Lots of history, lots of illustrations, a good bit of science, and some conjecture (inevitable in a book that deals with a project that was never built). A good overview of this design concept, which should perhaps give more credit to his mathematician wife and therefore be called the Sanger-Bredt Antipodal Bomber. Though well illustrated, the book veers off into fantasy with visions of global Nazi atomic bombers. The study was never anything more than a design study to garner funding for the 100 tonne thrust rocket motor. Like the A-12 and A-9 rocket concepts of Von Braun, many have taken a Hollywood approach to projecting a modern view of these WW II technologies as 'real' plans to attack America.
