Is this variable speed.

Yes it is, but it also the first feature to fail, at least in my shop. I don't know why this otherwise good and useful tool should have a badly placed set of controls and fragile variable speed feature, but it does.

What size is the grinding disc?

It uses 2inch discs same as the King Arthur's Merlin 2. The Proxxon seems less prone to over heating than the Merlin II.

Mine burnt up after 18 months, now what? sol?? get another??

I have purchased too many of these. The same or similar experience as yours. These are for ultra-light use. To the point that, in my opinion, they are not useful. I will not buy another. I have tried to use them for smoothing hand carved bowls, small to medium. They overheat very quickly. Can only be used for a few minutes at a time. Way overpriced for their durability.

Super fun little tool for light duty work!

I think it's a great little tool. These reviews I'm seeing about how it doesn't have enough torque are baffling to me. This little guy isn't made to cut 1/2" bar with a cutoff wheel. It's made to deburr edges or sand a rounded surface or a million other very light duty jobs. You should have an angle grinder to do heavy duty work. I really don't get it because it seems to me if you're buying this tool, you probably have several corded angle grinders, and at least one cordless, if not more. So why you would be trying to do anything but finishing work with this is beyond me. My one complaint is how crunchy it sounds in the neck. I'm sure there is a pretty sophisticated gear train in there, but it does sound like it's gonna tear itself apart any second the whole time it's being used. I hope it only sounds like that and it continues to work, because I really like the little guy. I don't use it much, but when I do need it, I get so happy because I love using it.

Avoid this like the plague

This tool is hot trash. There's no power. If you put any sort of pressure on the wheel. It overheats extremely bad. I've been through two of these. Neither one of them lasted more than 10 minutes at a time before it blew up. Started smoking and burnt my hand
