A lot depends on the temperature in your room and the stone you are testing. Once it is set and your diamond goes into the red, then test your other stones. I have found that if it is a semi precious stone there will be a movement from your starting lights by maybe one or two sections. If however the stone you are testing is glass it doesn't move at all. Cubic zirconium also moves the light. It takes a few goes to find the right settings each time because of surrounding temperature. Sorry I can't help any further....I am still learning myself! **Q: Can it identify natural Zircon** A: My understanding is that it will not specifically identify zircon but would tell you the stone in question was not glass, crystal or diamond. As it works on conductivity I would expect zircon to give a high reading but not as high as diamond. **Q: What number is for emerald?** A: I don't know, but the best thing to do would be to find out using a known genuine emerald - someone you know will have one. I am still unsure of some of the answers but this tester has provided much information for me. The instructions were not entirely easy to follow but I worked it out soon enough. I made sure that I put in a new battery, the battery I tried first still had some life in it for other gadgets but did not work for the tester. The tester is easy to handle and the lights and sound are very clear. Most of the stone I tested were given clear results, especially the diamonds. How ever it would be useful to know just what this is testing for as several coloured stones were also given a positive reading - but I have no idea what the readings actually mean. For example I have an antique ring which may be either ruby or garnet - it tested positive but didn't tell me what stone it was. For the price it is a very handy quick test. It comes in a neat case with instructions and a useful stone holder for small loose stones.
