It sticks much further out from the wall than any normal shelf you'd hang to display bric-a-brac. So, someone might not know that it was concealing guns, but I think it would stand out in a room. However, the more important thing to me is how awkward it is to use. Once we saw how wide it was standing from the wall, we thought we'd just sit it on a dresser top - but, you can't do that because of the way it opens. The entire shelf slides forward and the 'hidden' part stays in place. So, if it is wall-mounted, you have to slide the whole shelf forward, and then reach over it to manage to get to the guns. Very, very awkward. I have seen some others that look much less awkward to use.
