I did some tests with chrystalDisk and the results seemed the same as a slow SD card. Then I investigated further and found it depends on avoiding older spec USB sockets. On a good spec USB 3 it's quite good. Best way to test is with a 2GB file which should copy in about 20seconds. That is good enough for use as a backup device but it's important to appreciate how much slower this is than the SSDs especially the M. 2 type which maybe as much as 30 times faster.
