Review: The YoLink Water Leak Sensor 4 should be the simplest product in the world to get right. Detect water. Trigger an alarm. Shut off a valve. Done. And to be fair, on paper, it absolutely nails it: long-range LoRa connectivity, a built-in loud alarm, multi-year battery life, and supposed support for device-to-device (D2D) automation so it can shut off water locally without internet. But once you actually try to use it as part of a real system, the cracks show quickly. The biggest issue is the same one that plagues the rest of the YoLink ecosystem: D2D is “supported”… until it isn’t. YoLink markets D2D as the backbone of reliability: Leak detected → valve shuts off instantly → no cloud, no hub, no delay. And yes, technically, the Sensor 4 does support D2D pairing. But in practice: • It feels like a secondary or backup feature, not the primary control path • Setup is unintuitive and finicky • Behavior can vary depending on what it’s paired with (especially newer all-in-one valves) Even YoLink’s own approach makes it clear that the system is really designed around the hub and cloud, with D2D as an afterthought. That’s a problem for a safety device. Despite the marketing, you’re still largely living in the cloud whether you want to or not. The system leans heavily on app-based automations, hub connectivity, and cloud monitoring. Yes, D2D exists, but it’s not where the product feels most reliable. There’s also the issue of responsiveness. LoRa is excellent for range, but it’s not always fast. In some setups, there can be noticeable delay, which is not what you want when a leak is actively happening. Then there’s setup friction. This should be dead simple, but instead you deal with awkward pairing processes, state-dependent quirks, and a confusing split between app automations and direct device behavior. It’s the kind of system where you’re never 100% confident it will behave correctly when it actually matters. At its core, the Sensor 4 has an identity problem. It doesn’t know if it wants to be a true fail-safe local safety device or a cloud-connected smart home gadget. Right now, it tries to be both and doesn’t fully succeed at either. The hardware itself is good: • Loud onboard alarm • Excellent range • Long battery life But: • D2D is not as reliable or central as it should be • Real-world performance leans on cloud logic • Setup and behavior aren’t as foolproof as a safety product should be Final verdict: If you’re using it just for notifications, it’s a solid sensor. If you’re relying on it for true, offline, automatic water shutoff, it’s not nearly as confidence-inspiring as it should be. 3/10 — Good hardware, but the ecosystem and execution hold it back. EDIT: Shortly after submitting this review, one of the founders of the company reached out to me explaining the delay in the implementation of in-app D2D support, and several days later, the app was updated with full D2D support! I am wowed by YoLink's level of attention to remedying the issue. The device now works perfectly, 5/5 Stars!
Review: Excellent range, excellent battery life, and the on-device siren is a great addition. I don't think anything beats the Yolink ecosystem for ease of use, app user friendliness, battery life, and range.
